Aprica Pass in the Winter

Aprica Pass - Valtellina - italy

TheWorldOfTravel DE

The Aprica Pass, especially when seen within a historical context, links the Valtellina (Aprica) and the Val Camonica (Edolo). This may have been the location, or one of the locations, where local pre-Christian folk-pagans would meet for the eight seasonal festivals... going back thousands of years. It's more than just another pretty place.

Ophiuchus: The 13th constellation of the Zodiac - Part 4

Ophiuchus Revealed

The answer to all the media hype about this "new" zodiac sign

I think (auh-fucus) could be the correct pronunciation.
Let's just call it "O" geesh!!!

Sources: Jennifer Kiza Jordan/Hattiesburg New Age Examiner, gettyimages.com, Licia Avelar, Megan Friedman, AstrologyZone.com, CNN.com

Astronomically, our sky literally "changed" in 2009. The Ophiuchus constellation was always there, but it just wasn't part of the sun and moon's orbit around the earth. As far as one's own astrological sign, this would only affect those who have been born after November of 2009. I'm sort've glad that I'm not going to lose my "Moonchild" status of the Cancer sign. You have both a sun sign, and also a "moon sign" which you may want to look up if you aren't aware of what it is. Some of the new Zodiac dates from different sources have been off by a day, so don't totally fix in on the dates listed in Part 2. Since there's a Zodiac of both Western Astrology and Astronomy, I'm not certain if this means that there's not going to be an "Age of Aquarius" after all?

Ophiuchus is patterned after the ancient Sumerian god Enki "the serpent holder." Apparently, Enki (also known as "the healer") is also the inspiration for what is used today as the symbol of the medical industry, known as the "medical staff." The astrological origin of Ophiuchus can be found in Babylonian/Sumerian, Hellenistic/Greek, Islamic, Western Hindu, and Chinese mythology. The astronomical origin is much more widespread. For example, Roman or Gaulish.

Ophiuchus: The 13th constellation of the Zodiac - Part 3

The Cernic Connection

The ancient sky observatory discovered a few years ago near Cevo in Val Camonica was, in fact, a Temple to Cernunnos... the chief god of Gaulish polytheism. Cernunnos, like Ophiuchus, is known as "he who holds the snake."

'Cernunnos: The Astronomical Connection'

An article in The Druid Journal entitled 'The Druid Zodiac' says in regard to the ancient Gaulish polytheistic, astronomically-based, Gundestrup cauldron:

And is that Cernunnos there holding that snake? Clouter says yes, and identifies him with Ophiuchus, the shaman/snake charmer in the traditional system. Ophiuchus is a constellation that sits on the path of the planets, but usually is not given an official place in the zodiac of western astrology. Clouter suggests that Scorpio was the tail of the snake held by Cernunnos, making him a gigantic constellation.

Ophiuchus: The 13th constellation of the Zodiac - Part 2

The 13th Zodiac Sign – Ophiuchus

TheMindUnleashed.org - August 21, 2013

In mythology, Ophiucus is identified with the healer Asclepius, the son of Apollo, who was able to bring the dead back to life. Realizing his power, Hades convinced Zeus to kill Asclepius with a lightning bolt, and he was placed into the stars as a constellation after his death.

The constellation, Ophiuchus, has been known since ancient times, and is better known as Serpentarius, the Serpent Holder. It is included in the list of 48 constellations described by Ptolemy. Ophiuchus is depicted as a man handling a serpent; his body dividing the large snake into two parts, giving way to the symbol used today as an Asclepius – the medical staff. Astrologers have not included Ophiuchus in the wheel of Astrological signs because the Sun spends only about nineteen days in this 13th sign of the Mazzaroth. Not that there wasn’t a 13th sign in the Heavens, but as far as Astrologers were concerned, the Sun traveled from the constellation ‘Scorpius’ and then proceeded directly into the sign of Sagittarius. In reality, this was not the case. The Sun, for 19 days of the year, travels through the star constellation ‘Ophiuchus’ before entering Sagittarius from Scorpius – see chart below. thus The sign of Ophiuchus is patterned after the original ‘Serpent Holder’, Enki, a Sumerian god.

The signs of the Zodiac are for the most part, the highway, or path on which the Sun takes it’s yearly journey across the heavens – as it would appear to Earthlings. These signs are actually star constellations occupying space in which the Sun appears to travels in an earth year. The original twelve signs/constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces are quite familiar to everyone, however, the thirteenth sign and constellation, [Ophiuchus], is in fact, not well known. To acknowledge a 13th sign now would seem awkward for astrologers, who like the tidiness of 12 signs that rule over the 12 houses of the Zodiac. The heavens are alive and they do change after a few thousand years and the astrologer who wants to maintain accuracy must change along with the signs in the heavens.

Ophiuchus 13th sign zodiac The constellation of Ophiuchus is the only sign of the Zodiac which is linked to a real man. This man lived in ancient Egypt around the 27th century BCE, and his name was Imhotep [again patterned after Enki]. Many of the same attributes of Imhotep can also be found in the Biblical Hebrew man Joseph, son of Jacob – [see comparison chart for these two men in separate article]. Imhotep is credited with many accomplishments including the knowledge and use of medicine. It is said of Imhotep that he brought the art of healing to mankind. The symbol of a serpent [or snake], which is still widely used today to represent the medical profession, was used to represent Imhotep. Imhotep was also known as ‘Aesclepius’ to the ancient Greeks, but by any name the attributes are still all the same. The attributes listed below describe the Serpent Holder, Imhotep, i.e. the Hebrew Joseph, and Aesclepius. The keyword descriptions seen below, originated with Betty Rhodes, and are the attributes for the 13th sign of the Zodiac – Ophiuchus:

- interpreter of dreams, vivid premonitions,

- attracts good luck and fruitful blessings,

- serpent holder, lofty ideals, – a seeker of peace and harmony,

- doctor of medicine or science, natural-pathic, – adds, increases, joins, or gathers together – poetical, inventive nature, expanding qualities,

- seeks higher education and wisdom, – overseer, supervisor of work, – fame – either grand, or completely misunderstood, – longevity, aspirations of healing the ills of man,

- architect, builder, reaches for the stars, figuratively and literally,

- tax assessor, or levys taxes,

- astrological talents, intuitive,

- large family indicated, but apt to be separated from them when young,

- the number twelve holds great significance,

- foresight and good fortune to benefit from hard times,

- has secret enemies in family or close associations,

- many jealous of this subject,

- notable father, apple of father’s eye when young,

- high position in life expected [depending on aspects] highest fame and legend comes after death

Ophiuchus: The 13th constellation of the Zodiac - Part 1

Ophiuchus

Ophiuchus /ɒfiˈjuːkəs/ is a large constellation located around the celestial equator. Its name is from the Greek Ὀφιοῦχος "serpent-bearer", and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation Serpens. Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It was formerly referred to as Serpentarius  and Anguitenens.

Ophiuchus has been covered here before. There was a strong ancient tie-in between Gaulish-Cernic culture and this constellation. High in the mountains of the Val Camonica near Cevo, there was found an ancient stone observatory seemingly dedicated to Ophiuchus. Many people today consider the constellation to be the 13th sign of the Zodiac (November 30 to December 17). Just a side note: In April 2007, astronomers announced that the Swedish-built Odin satellite had made the first detection of clouds of molecular oxygen in space, following observations in the constellation Ophiuchus.

History and mythology

There is no evidence of the constellation preceding the classical era, and in Babylonian astronomy, a "Sitting Gods" constellation seems to have been located in the general area of Ophiuchus. However, Gavin White proposes that Ophiuchus may in fact be remotely descended from this Babylonian constellation, representing Nirah, a serpent-god who was sometimes depicted with his upper half human but with serpents for legs.

.
The earliest mention of the constellation is in Aratus, informed by the lost catalogue of Eudoxus of Cnidus (4th century BC):

To the Phantom's back the Crown is near, but by his head mark near at hand the head of Ophiuchus, and then from it you can trace the starlit Ophiuchus himself: so brightly set beneath his head appear his gleaming shoulders. They would be clear to mark even at the midmonth moon, but his hands are not at all so bright; for faint runs the gleam of stars along on this side and on that. Yet they too can be seen, for they are not feeble. Both firmly clutch the Serpent, which encircles the waist of Ophiuchus, but he, steadfast with both his feet well set, tramples a huge monster, even the Scorpion, standing upright on his eye and breast. Now the Serpent is wreathed about his two hands – a little above his right hand, but in many folds high above his left.

To the ancient Greeks, the constellation represented the god Apollo struggling with a huge snake that guarded the Oracle of Delphi. Later myths identified Ophiuchus with Laocoön, the Trojan priest of Poseidon, who warned his fellow Trojans about the Trojan Horse and was later slain by a pair of sea serpents sent by the gods to punish him.

According to Roman era mythography, the figure represents the healer Asclepius, who learned the secrets of keeping death at bay after observing one serpent bringing another healing herbs. To prevent the entire human race from becoming immortal under Asclepius' care, Jupiter killed him with a bolt of lightning, but later placed his image in the heavens to honor his good works.

In medieval Islamic astronomy (Azophi's Uranometry, 10th century), the constellation was known as Al-Ḥawwaʾ "the snake-charmer".

Aratus describes Ophiuchus as trampling on Scorpius with his feet. This is depicted in Renaissance to Early Modern star charts, beginning with Albrecht Dürer in 1515; in some depictions (such as that of Johannes Kepler, 1604), Scorpius also seems to threaten to sting Serpentarius in the foot. This is consistent with Azophi, who already included ψ Oph and ω Oph as the snake-charmer's "left foot", and θ Oph and ο Oph as his "right foot", making Ophiuchus a zodiacal constellation at least as regards his feet. This arrangement has been taken as symbolic in later literature, and placed in relation to the words spoken by God to the serpent in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15).

Incontri Tra/Montani: Acknowledging the importance of our shared pagan past

As covered here before, Incontri Tra/Montani ("encounters between the mountains") is a meeting group between the main cultural organizations of both the Val Camonica and the Valtellina (Sondrio), for discussion regarding the logistics of forming a "Camuno-Valtellina province" including Val Camonica. It also forms a political voice for this rural mountain region.

This group formed in 2009, and their activities and ongoing meetings are covered on their website if you can either read Italian or wish to translate it. I have found it too difficult to actually translate word for word for posting here. I found one article regarding one of their 2009 meetings in which the shared pagan history of both valleys was considered. This short article was published by the Val Camonica Distretto Culturale, and also involved the Camunian cultural group Circolo Culturale Ghislandi.

This Camunian-Valtellinese shared cultural history is significant not only because it ties the two valleys together since time immemorial, but also in that there was a shared spiritual experience. I think it was at the Tonale Pass that the Pagans---Camunians, Valtellinese, Chiavennaschi, and Bergamaschi from the Alpine stretches---would all gather for the eight seasonal festivals. Presumably each would last for several days of rituals.

If I could time travel to witness one historical event, I imagine myself at perhaps a Midsummer gathering... maybe a thousand years ago. Standing with my ancestors along the high mountain pass, feeling the warm summer breeze blowing against me, amid the ominous colors of a golden glowing moon against a darkening blue twilight sky, and observing the rich colors of the high Alps as they are slightly illuminated by the dusk sun.

Perhaps this is the chief ceremony, and a high priestess is standing at a high point with an upraised staff with a small sickle attached to it. She is speaking loudly in an old dialect that I can't begin to recognize, but I somehow just know that she is of my family. I'm standing about 25 yards away. Her face is mostly shadowed, but I can see her beautiful long grayish hair draped over her robe. Although I cannot understand her words, I sense that it has something to do with the great Almother who is watching over us and this earthly paradise.

Back to 2009, this meeting was also attended by representatives from neighboring provinces, including the Swiss canton of Ticino. Among the subjects covered at this meeting was a new book entitled 'Ci Chiamavano Streghe' ("they called us witches") by Giuseppe Laterza. If I understand correctly, the idea of "duel awareness" regarding this and other shared history was emphasized.  This inquisition of the church against local native pagan culture was also present in the Valtellina.

From the article: Just remember that between May and June 1518 in Pisogne, Breno, Edolo, Cemmo and Darfo were prosecuted between 100 and 150 people, of which some 70 the judges of the Inquisition issued a death sentence, then regularly performed. Most of these people, about two-thirds, were women. It went on to say that "witchcraft" was really a scapegoat for a general fear of even the remotest speck of female "deviance" according to church doctrine. I'm guessing that could be something as simple as dancing, as pagans often did. The church and state worked together to this end. In this case, the Venetian state and local Vatican authorities.

This period was described as a "clash of cultures," between the urban (church and state) and the rural (Christian-Pagan harmony). Oddly, we see this cultural-political conflict in the United States even today. This internal crusade ("witch hunt") was a European cultural civil war. An estimated 110,000 "authorities," over the course of three centuries, conducted an estimated 60,000 executions. As we're beginning to see pretty clearly today, there are many millions of people today who would love to do this again worldwide... in the name of another supremacist religion.

Oms upon the approaching full wolf moon III

Christ of the Ozarks

Christ of the Ozarks statue is a monumental sculpture of Jesus located near Eureka Springs, Arkansas, atop Magnetic Mountain. It was erected in 1966 as a "Sacred Project" by Gerald L. K. Smith and stands 65.5 feet (20 meters) high.

Although not as well known or as spectacular as the "Christ the Redeemer" statue in Rio de Janeiro, the "Christ of the Ozarks" seems to have its own unique energy as it stands in the forested Ozark mountains. Somehow when significant monuments stand alone in remote areas like this, there seems to be a special connection made for a lot of people... as like maybe a special rendezvous point.

'Study shows women carry the DNA of sexual partners'

April 11, 2015 – Scientists have discovered that a sizeable minority of women have Y-chromosome gene sequences in their blood. This is interesting because as you may know, Y-chromosomes are the chromosomes that belong to men, so ladies, what are they doing there, and where did they come from?

A bizarre new way of understanding DNA. Hopefully this turns out to not be true. I had thought that this concept was finally dead and buried?

Upcoming Frank Zappa documentary

Filmmaker Alex Winter is currently producing a documentary on the life of rock star Frank Zappa. Personally, I found Zappa to be the overall most interesting person as far as famous musicians... or even just celebrities in general. He was so totally off onto his own ideas.. about everything. Actually, that's rare for anyone; as people are dragged into the mainstream arena sooner or later. I wish he was still alive, and that there could be a meeting of the minds between he and Ted Nugent. That would have been interesting..

Can't wait. I never tire of watching old Zappa interviews on YouTube.

Delta Dawn

Maybe as like with the song 'Rhiannon', the 1972 top ten hit 'Delta Dawn' could be rethought of with a new meaning? Actually, any song you like could be personalized or tied to a new meaning. Although a classic country song with Christian overtones, the lyrical lines Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on.... Could it be a faded rose from days gone by? remind me of traditional rose symbolism. For example the Camunian rose, sub rosa, the black rose, or Guido von List's Vehme star rose. Also, the meaning of the song implies that the eccentric protagonist somehow missed some important past appointment in her life, and wishes to make thing right finally. Perhaps redemption? Who wouldn't want to go back and correct all of their mistakes and/or change their life's direction? I think this version of 'Delta Dawn', featuring a 14 year old Tanya Tucker on the old tv show 'Hee Haw' is the best version; even more so than the studio recording by her.

'Necronomicon'

The 'Necronomicon' is a fictional book of magic from the stories of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. It's amazing how popular his stories still are today since he was virtually unknown during his life. Actually, fictional "books of magic" have been part of the theme in many dozens of horror movies--such as the 'Evil Dead' movies--over the years. One of his stories was even entitled 'History of the Necronomicon', adding to the perceived mythos.

Although Lovecraft insisted that the book was pure invention (and other writers invented passages from the book for their own works), there are accounts of some people actually believing the Necronomicon to be a real book. Lovecraft himself sometimes received letters from fans inquiring about the Necronomicon 's authenticity. Pranksters occasionally listed the Necronomicon for sale in book store newsletters or inserted phony entries for the book in library card catalogues..

There have been some very strange publications of the "Necronomicon" over the decades, as well as references in popular culture and offbeat theories linking Lovecraft with Aliester Crowley and the occult. Some are covered in the above link.

'Rhiannon'

Rhiannon, a figure in English and Welsh literature and earlier Celtic mythology, as well as the great song by Fleetwood Mac. The song lyrics almost suggest more of a spirit than a person, or at least a free spirit. The song, as well as Stevie Nicks, were featured in a couple of episodes of 'American Horror Story: Coven' in 2014; centering around the character Misty Day who looked a bit like the young Stevie Nicks actually.

If you visit this video webpage, it's easy to see that younger horror fans and pagans have discovered the song.....

A small fire crackling away on the patio, the night sky above me, cold winter chill to the air, candles softly glowing and a glass of mead in my hand as I listen to this song and twirl and dance, taking in the elements. :) By the Gods and Goddess' I love this song! Now, back to my crazy dancing...(Wonder what my new neighbours will think when they catch me dancing in my garden at 2.30am? lol!)
-- VampiressOfShadows

Rhiannon.... is often considered to be related to the Gaulish horse goddess Epona. The resemblance is her horse affinity, and her son's, as mare and foal; also a paradoxical way of sitting on her horse in a calm, static way, like a key image of Epona. While this is generally accepted connection among scholars of the Mabinogi and Celtic studies, Ronald Hutton as a general historian, is sceptical.

More thought-provoking quotes

I just wanted to add regarding the first quote, as it was mainly in regards to people who "just follow orders" regardless if it's right or wrong, or the unthinking underlings of demigod figures in authority. It wasn't in regards to "religion" in particular.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The Prince symbol

Did you know that the musician Prince changed his name to a "non-name" symbol to get out of massive contractual obligations and fees. Since he literally had no written name, private legally binding contracts no longer applied to him. I'm sure that it was a little more complex than that, but that's the gist of it. That's why he went from Michael Jackson type fame, to being largely ignored by the media. He made powerful men angry. Also, the Dr. Pepper "Mr. Sweet" ads--although funny--are clearly a caricature of him which goes against the usual protocol of commercial industries and advertisement.

Oms upon the approaching full wolf moon

"I frequently tramped 8 or 10 miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines." -- Henry David Thoreau

Full Wolf Moon – January Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January’s full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon. ['Full Moon Names and Their Meanings' - FarmersAlmanac.com]

This month's full wolf moon will be on Saturday, January 23 at 8:46 PM. With coyote activity picking up where I live, they can stand in for the wolves if I'm lucky enough to hear them singing on the trails that night.

Occultic code for lotteries?

I couldn't resist at least buying one $2 ticket for this week's 1.5 billion dollar multi-state "Powerball" lottery. If the winner just takes the lump sum rather than over the course of 29 years, then the amount would be at least one billion, which translates to about 500 million after taxes. Just the annual interest would be about 10 million per year after taxes.

I sat down for about twenty minutes to formulate a congruent code based on my life. To play, one must choose five numbers between 1 and 69, along with one "Powerball" number between 1 and 29 to increase the odds a bit. I chose five numbers, all representing "completion," along with a powerball number "3" which represents the Pythagorian code of the universe. I chose four personal numbers of completion, along with the number "9" which is the number of "completion."

Matching 5 out of 6 numbers wins, and the odds of winning were 1 in 192 million. All of my numbers had multiple meanings, and were all linked with each other as a set. Here are the results:

Winning numbers.... 4 - 8 - 19 - 27 - 34 - 10
My numbers............ 3 - 9 - 18 - 28 - 34 - 41

Although I only chose one number correct, I think that I perhaps demonstrated that I increased the odds by using a form of personal numerology to form a set of linked numbers. I seem to have gotten the attention of the gatekeeper of fate with my number codex, although that naturally wouldn't happen all of the time.

Just in.... 'Salem Witch Trials Execution Site Found'

A team of scholars in Salem, Massachusetts, has uncovered the scene of one of the darkest chapters in the history of New England: The site where 19 innocent people, mostly women, were executed after being accused of witchcraft in 1692.

Today, the site is located behind a Walgreens in what local NPR station WGBH called "an abandoned jungle of barren woods and trash" where homeless people often camp.

Since the hangings were witnessed by people all over Salem, many assumed they took place at the top of Gallows Hill, which is located just up the road. But a team of researchers found that some of those witnesses couldn't have seen the hill from where they were.

Hopefully, some time soon, this area will be preserved. There is little doubt that it will since it would be a big tourist draw, but I'm think in different terms.

New TV series features "mountain folk"

WGN America’s Outsiders Full Length Trailer

OutsidersWGN

Outsiders series premiere Tuesday, January 26 at 9 pm ET / 8 pm CT on WGN America.

“Outsiders” tells the story of the Farrell clan, a family of outsiders living off the grid who will stop at nothing to defend their mountain.

Follow Outsiders:

Twitter https://twitter.com/outsiderswgn

Set in Kentucky Appalachia, the plot is apparently about a clan of mountain people whose longtime home has been targeted (perhaps via "eminent domain") by corporate interests for the exploitation of its resources (clear cutting, fracking, etc.). It seems slightly over the top, but it looks interesting. I've always been fascinated with mountain life. Technically I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and of course the Camunians were/are very Alpine with a millennia-long culture based on mountain life and spirituality.

In 2008 the producers of a mainstream horror movie, entitled 'Shelter' starring Julianne Moore, came to Pittsburgh advertising for numerous extras to play the defamative "West Virginia mountain people" with that "inbred look"...as if large cities don't have more than their share of derelicts and nutters. I don't think that's really what's being projected here, and it seems more in the realm of fantasy. Actually, there are certain peoples around the world who, though DNA analysis, have proven to be extremely "related"... but if anyone named them, they would probably cry bloody murder.

Anyway, I can relate with the concept of rural or mountain people. I naturally would at least try to see them as the protagonists here. 'WGN America is channel 307 on DirecTV. WGN America also carries the popular series 'Salem', inspired by the Salem witch trials. I didn't get WGN until very recently, so I have no idea what it's about.
