Raven Grimassi's official bio
The Fellowship of the Pentacle is no longer or not currently active
************
Raven Grimassi passed away one year ago today. I've come to believe that we are on this earth, in each of our many lifetimes here, in order to advance the baton in probably a number of areas to the best of our limited abilities. In spite of all of our faults, "the best of us" will usually do this in at least whatever small measure that we can. I think Raven did that very well, however the collective journey continues. "BE the change that you want to see in the world."
If you lose someone from your life--whether family, friend, mentor, or more of a public figure--BE that person in a sense, if you see fit to do so. That is one of the greatest honors that we can bestow upon another person. I think that one of the first spirits which he met after he passed, perhaps right after those to which he was closest here on earth, was Aradia herself. She must have stood tall and beautiful, and she may have said something such as "You have done well my kindred."
This earthly realm, although it often does not feel so, is all about us! Not in a manner of greed, but our experiences are its primary purpose for being. I believe this concept was a part of Raven's quote above. I like to believe that those ancestors of mine who had their true essential culture taken away from them, can look down upon me under the moonlight and be able to say "Even after all of this time, he chose US and our ways over all others." I no longer say "RIP," since Raven will continue on in his own soul journey, and we must continue on as well.
Birth.... Life.... Death and to a New Arising! He is now the Morning and the Spring!

Raven Grimassi
Gary Charles Erbe (April 12, 1951 – March 10, 2019), known as Raven Grimassi, was an American author of over 20 books, including topics on Wicca, Stregheria, witchcraft and neo-paganism. He popularized Stregheria, the religious practice of witchcraft with roots in Italy. Grimassi presented this material in the form of neo-paganism through his books. Raven had been a practitioner of witchcraft for over 45 years and was the co-director of the Ash, Birch and Willow tradition. He died of pancreatic cancer on March 10, 2019.

'Dark Secret' ('The Craft')
'Dark Secret' by Matthew Sweet, featured in the powerful "beach scene" from 'The Craft'. I couldn't find a short video of the actual scene. I did find the whole film on Daily Motion, of which the scene appears at 53:20 below. When they initially walk through the cave-like rock structure, it reflects the concept shown in many films of the downtrodden and marginalized coming up from out of the ground; finally emerging to the surface. The film 'Gangs of New York' portrays one such example of this in the opening scene (followed by the fight sequence).
One interesting sidenote of the film is that the young women invoked the male godhead, referring to "him" rather than the female goddess. Perhaps it's neither here nor there, but I would think that Hollywood would have stuck firmly to the goddess. Of course, there are both god and goddess in European witchcraft or Wicca; the divine masculine and the divine feminine.
************
'Dark Secret' - Matthew Sweet
You are sickened by the weakness
Of a heart that's filled with fear
And if the world won't understand you
You can make it disappear
'Cause there's a dark secret
Carry with you
Carry with you
And deep inside, the way you hate them
On the outside, doesn't show
And oh, they think that they defy you
They are slaved to what you know
It's a dark secret
Carry with you
Carry with you
And it's a dark secret
Carry with you…

One thing on YouTube that I've found interesting are people who take a little interest in visiting the filming locations of their favorite films. Often there are films which affect individuals in a powerful manner, and it's only logical that they would ponder the actual locations... that time-space thing. I recall one French guy who vacationed in Washington state to visit the filming location of 'First Blood', and he filmed his experience on "the bridge" and other places. I mean, the sky's the limit... "the Brady Bunch house"... "the Scarface mansion"... "the Fast Times At Ridgemont High mall"... one guy even found the Fast Times' "Hamilton family house with the pool"... another person actually tracked down "the drug deal gone bad house" from 'Boogie Nights'. Of course, I can think of many older films or younger ones, and one's generation obviously affects what they would gravitate towards.
I can even recall looking up "Norma Desmond's mansion" from 'Sunset Boulevard' (1950), which appeared so mysterious to me in the early part of the film... largely because of the black and white cinematography. It was demolished in 1957 to construct an office building. The Los Angeles mansion almost appeared to be off the beaten path in the film, but the area has filled out now. 'Vertigo' (1958) was another one with fascinating images of 50s San Francisco, and not surprisingly is another "filming locations" favorite. 'Vertigo' is now 70 years old, that's a scary thought. 'The Birds' (1963)--filmed in Bodega Bay, California--is one old film in which the location is eerily similar today.
‘THE BIRDS’ MUSEUM: A Morbid Homage to Hitchcock’s Feathery Friends
"I also have to salute the great city of Bodega Bay for embracing all of this, and keeping so many of the landmarks tourist friendly. Some towns aren't so proud of their cinematic history, especially if that history involved birds murdering innocent woman and children."
Believe it or not, 'The Craft' will celebrate its silver anniversary next year! Many Neopagans can trace the start of their paths to when the film first came out. The below video of the "Dangerous Type scene" is a powerful one from the film, set to the song 'Dangerous Type' by Letters To Cleo. After some early struggles, this scene just screeeams out the simple concept of "EMERGING." To me the film represents and displays an idea, more than its storyline. Ultimately what specifically that idea is, is a question of some debate; something that I've tackled before, and will later on, but will just let it lie for now.

'Revisiting the L.A. Filming Locations of The Craft 20 Years Later'
Jared Cowan - LAWeekly.com - May 2, 2016
[Image right: "We are the weirdos, mister." Rachel True, left, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Robin Tunney in Simi Valley in The Craft; Credit: Columbia Pictures]
The long lineage of movies about witchcraft can be traced back to the silent film days when, in 1922, the dramatized documentary Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages was released. Since then, there have been mega witch hits such as The Blair Witch Project and critical darlings like recent release The Witch. Fan favorites that didn’t catch on at the box office or with critics, like Teen Witch and Hocus Pocus, later became cable-network staples.
None of these films, however, has come close to achieving a long-lasting cultural impact on a generation of fans like 1996’s The Craft. The movie, about four outcast teen girls living in L.A. who form their own coven and learn to cultivate their powers, was the perfect mix of '90s grunge with classic fantasy and horror elements.
In a year dominated by blockbusters such as Independence Day, Twister and the first Mission: Impossible, The Craft didn’t rank anywhere near the top of 1996’s highest-grossing movies. Yet the film, released on May 3, 1996, was most certainly a hit with millennials and young Gen Xers, grossing about $55 million worldwide on an estimated $15 million budget. Directed by Andrew Fleming and starring Robin Tunney as Sarah, Fairuza Balk as Nancy, Neve Campbell as Bonnie and Rachel True as Rochelle, The Craft is one of those rare films that fans still obsess over years later. (I mean, who still talks about Twister?)

Album: Where Do We Go From Here
It's not like I'm walking alone into the valley of the shadow of death
Stand beside one another, 'cause it ain't over yet
I'd be willing to bet that if we don't back down
You and I will be the ones that are holding the Crown in the end
When it's over, we can say, "Well done"
But not yet, 'cause it's only begun
So, pick up, and follow me, we're the only ones
To fight this thing, until we've won
Lets drive on and don't look back
It doesn't mean we can't learn from our past
All the things that we mighta done wrong
We could've been doing this all along
[*]
Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We're on the frontline [x2]
And we'll be carrying on, until the day it doesn't matter anymore
Step aside, you forgot what this is for
We fight to live, we live to fight
And tonight, you'll hear my battle cry
We live our lives on the frontlines
We're not afraid of the fast times
These days have opened up my eyes
And now, I see where the threat lies
[* Repeat]
(Echo) We live our lives on the frontlines
We're not afraid of the past times
We live our lives on the frontlines
We've got to lead the way [x2]

'Witchcraft Out of the Shadows - A Complete History' (Ruickbie; 2004) .... book review
Amazon.com
'Witchcraft Out of the Shadows - A Complete History' (Ruickbie; 2004)
Leo Ruickbie
This complete history of witchcraft from Ancient Greece to the present day charts the rise and development of witchcraft and the modern witchcraft religion of Wicca. This in-depth investigation discovers how the ideas we have about witchcraft took shape thousands of years ago in the myths and religions of the ancient world. It looks at why these ideas were expressed so violently during the era of the witch trials, and reveals how witchcraft has been transformed into one of the most radical and fastest growing religions of our age—a religion of equality and compassion that still has the power to unsettle even the bravest amongst us. With fresh insights and previously unpublished material drawn from the author's doctoral research into the mysticism, magic, and social meaning of Wicca, this is the first book to bring witchcraft fully out of the shadows.

'Witchcraft Out of the Shadows - A Complete History' (Ruickbie; 2004)
Leo Ruickbie
Dr Leo Ruickbie is a sociologist and historian specialising in the field of witchcraft, Wicca, magic and the occult. He hold a PhD from King's College, London, for his work on modern witchcraft, and is the author of several books including Witchcraft Out of the Shadows and Faustus: The Life and Times of a Renaissance Magician. In 2008 and 2009 he exhibited on the subject of witchcraft in France. As well as giving public talks and writing articles for Pagan Dawn, Watkins Review and ASANAS, he also runs the WICA (witchology.com) website.

.
One thing about this book is that it's very thorough. The only thing that I could slightly knock it for is that it didn't go back to prehistoric evidence of Proto-European spirituality; including the Earth Mother, the Horned God, and the Nebra sky disk. It started with the pre-Christian era, and was very complete from that point onward as far as I could tell.
The book started off with three chapters on 'The Early History of Witchcraft in Europe', entitled 'Age of Shadows'. First was ancient pre-Olympian Greece... "The Birthplace of All Sorceries." Essentially, it was about Hecatean tradition. and how it later conflated a bit with the the gods of Classical Greece, and later Christian Greece; and it delved into the mythology of Hecate's daughters Circe and Medea as well. Medea was a prominent character in the ancient Greek legend of 'Jason and the Argonauts'; you may recall the 1963 film.
Second was entitled 'East of Midgard', and delved into the history and mythology of the Odinic tradition in northern Europe. Included in this chapter was a sub-section entitled 'People of the Oak', which described the pre-Christian Druidic tradition; and of which I found particularly interesting. Ruickbie even gave a small account of the interaction between ancient Germania and Gaul.
Third was a chapter entitled 'South of Heaven', and was a very objectively complete overview--much if it in great detail--of the history of witchcraft/pagan traditions in the Medieval/Christian era... the burning times. I found the 'Age of Shadows' to be the most enjoyable part of the book, especially the first two chapters. I would have liked to have heard Ruickbie's opinion of how the early Proto-European traditions tied together.
.
The next three chapters were entitled 'Born of Shadows', and delved into the history of modern witchcraft. First, he gives a brief summary of the survivals of the ancient magical or mystery traditions at the closing of the nineteenth century. It started with Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism, the Celtic revival, Charles G. Leland's long study on Italian Stregheria and its continued existence in a few rural locations, Hermeticism and Golden Dawn, the influence of Aleister Crowley, and Margaret Murray's "Witch Cult" hypothesis.
Second was about the invention of Wicca entitled 'The Craft of Invention'. Ruickbie proved beyond a doubt that an English Freemason named Gerald Gardner literally invented "Wicca" out of thin air. He actually used elements of Masonry, Hermeticism, and the magical works of Aleister Crowley and tried to pass them off as the ancient native magical tradition of the British Isles... and that he was a part of a long surviving coven. Personally I think that the basic idea of "Wicca" was a great idea, and I don't understand the need to rush in exaggerated claims to prove the legitimacy of what was an ancient tradition of some form.
Next was a chapter on the development of Wicca. Somewhat comically, Ruickbie detailed how a very knowledgeable associate named Doreen Valiente "cleaned up" Gardner's sloppy work and made it practical and workable. This chapter went into detail of how Wicca unfolded after Gardner's death. Lots of names were dropped, mostly charlatans and pretenders; but it seemed to me that Doreen Valiente and Patricia Crowther were sincere and practical leaders.
.
The final three chapters were entitled 'Empire of Shadows', and went into great detail about every aspect of modern witchcraft today; basically in the English-speaking world, or at least as of 2004. Although undoubtedly important, it was quite wordy and monotonous. I know, it's important to understand what something is, and not what people perceive it is, what you think it is, or what you may want it to be. Still, I think it could have been summarized in a short chapter. However, for what this section was trying to accomplish, it was very complete. This book was a good and complete chronological history of pre-Christian European spiritual/magical traditions--including historically conflated elements--from ancient times up to their emerging time-nexus today.
