Strawberry Moon 2020 - Part II

Crave the Night

As I type this, it's currently 12:20 AM on May 15th. I just came in the house from what I call "nature's bedroom," our beyond-the-backyard back deck. It's very dark back there, and as occurs from time to time, an owl perched itself on a telephone wire. All I could see was it's black form against the city lights in the far distance. I could tell that it was facing away from me by the movement of its symbolically horned head moving, scanning the hillside for the movement of rodents. If someone was somehow unfamiliar with owls, they may have thought it to be a thick dangerous caped horned griffin scoping the land for it's next victim. When it became aware of me, it took off, revealing its six foot wingspan.

The next full moon--the Strawberry Moon--will occur on the evening of Friday, June 5th.

Hveravellir hot spring on Kjölur plateau, Iceland

[Featured recently on Windows 10 Spotlight]

Some spots on Earth simply look unearthly. The Hveravellir Nature Reserve on the Kjölur plateau in central Iceland certainly fits that description. Dotted with hot springs, the rugged terrain here calls to adventurers from around the world. An ancient trail across the plateau called Kjalvegur hinn forni (Old Kjalvegur) passes through elevations high enough, and with such little precipitation, that it’s considered a cold desert. Nevertheless, horseback riders, cars, and people trudge across the path. All that effort deserves a reward, so a dip in one of the hot springs should fit the bill.

Bobby Vinton - My Special Angel (1963)

TheLimePopsicle

Released on the 1963 album, "Greatest Hits Of The Golden Groups". Kind of a strange album for this song to be included on since it was a '50's hit for Bobby Helms, not a group. The Vogues evenually had a hit with a remake but that wasn't until years after this album was recorded. So, I guess you could say this album predicted that a group would have a hit with the song years before they did! Bobby re-recorded this song in the '80's and that version seems easier to find than this one.

              The beautiful Brenda Benet

************

Brenda Benet

Actress. She is best remembered for her role as the scheming villainess 'Lee Dumonde' on the daytime serial "Days of our Lives," which she played from 1979 until her death in 1982. A classic example of a modern-day Hollywood tragedy, her acting career spanned just over 16 years with a wide range of guest appearances on television. Born Brenda Ann Nelson in Hollywood, California, she briefly attended college at the University of California, Los Angeles.

She became interested in an acting career and her first roles were in 1964 on television's musical variety show "Shindig!" and the daytime soap opera "The Young Marrieds." During the 1960s and 1970s she made appearances on numerous television shows, including "I Dream of Jeannie," "Mannix," "My Three Sons," "It Takes a Thief," "Hogan's Heroes," "Love, American Style, "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," "The Love Boat," "Fantasy Island" Her movie credits include "Beach Ball" (1965), "Harum Scarum" (1965, with Elvis Presley), Track of Thunder" (1967), and "Walking Tall" (1973, with Joe Don Baker).

Her last television appearance was in 1982, in an episode of "Father Murphy." She was first married to actor Paul Peterson (1967 to 1970) and then to actor Bill Bixby (1971 to 1979), with whom she had a son who died of a cardiac arrest in 1981 while hospitalized for a sudden respiratory illness. His death drove her into a severe depression from which she never recovered and she committed suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in West Los Angeles, California at the age of 36.

'Walking Tall' (1973)

Two actresses associated with this film went on to commit suicide: Elizabeth Hartman in June 1987; Brenda Benet took her life in April 1982.

Brenda Benet Tribute (video)

A friend of my mother went to school with Bill Bixby, which shows the "three degrees of separation." I can think of many other such examples, but it would make it seem like I place some type of special personal importance on it if I mentioned them all the time.

Actors Who Committed Suicide

One forgotten actress who committed suicide was thirty year old Pina Pellicer, best known for playing the role of "Louisa" in the 1961 film 'One-Eyed Jacks. One of the most bizarre suicides that I remember was that of the former boxing referee Mitch Halpern. Halpern was considered THE next great boxing referee, a particularly finite skill. He was already in the same breathe as Mills Lane and Joe Cortez. He had looks right out've central casting so to speak, was engaged to be married, had tremendous prospects for future fame and fortune, and was considered particularly unflappable!

Lies, Litigation, And Jean-Claude Van Damme: An Exploration Into The Reality Behind ‘Bloodsport’

Dariel Figueroa - UPROXX.com - October 15, 2015

After the death of Bruce Lee, audiences were hungry for a similar breed of action hero, one that could provide moviegoers with the same kind of primal athleticism and martial arts skills. In 1988, Bloodsport gave a first starring role to Jean-Claude Van Damme (who celebrates his 55th birthday this week), a Belgian brawler skilled in the martial art of karate. Van Damme possessed some of the same qualities of Lee: handsome, chiseled from granite, and able to perform difficult feats including flying spin kicks and full splits. Bloodsport wasn’t an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme’s stoic charisma and the memorable fighting scenes helped turn it into a hit: On a budget of $1.5 million, the film grossed over $11 million worldwide.

Van Damme plays Frank Dux, a man who goes AWOL from the U.S. Army to compete in the Kumite martial arts tournament. The character and story are purportedly based on the real-life Frank Dux — he is also credited in Bloodsport as the fight coordinator — who claims to have served in the military in Southeast Asia. In 1975, the real Frank Dux, per his account, didn’t shirk his military duties, but he did claim to compete in the shadowy Kumite tournament, a three-day proceeding in the Bahamas that involved some of the best martial artists in the world fighting each other for a chance to call themselves the champion of their respective weight class. Dux’s participation in the 1975 Kumite — which was held once every five years and sponsored by the International Fighting Arts Association (I.F.A.A.) — was detailed in a Black Belt magazine feature in 1980, and served as the inspiration for the Van Damme film. To take the interview with Dux as fact, though, is a shaky proposition from the start — it starts with this disclaimer:

Although there is no convenient way to verify each and every detail connected with this story, the editors have verified enough of the basic facts to feel confident in publishing it. But since we are not a liberty to share the corroborating evidence with the public, we acknowledge that each reader may have a different idea of what the facts permit him to believe.

Equinox (1970) | 10 Thousand Subscribers Special

No Real Order

This is taken straight out of Monster Fred's personal 'old school' stash in celebration of 10 thousand subscribers.

Equinox (1970 film)

Equinox is a 1970 American supernatural horror film directed by Jack Woods, and starring Edward Connell, Barbara Hewitt, Frank Bonner and Robin Christopher. Though uncredited, producer Dennis Muren also served as a second director. The film focuses on four teenagers picnicking in a California canyon, where they stumble upon an ancient book containing secrets of a strange world that exists alongside humans, and consequently unleash a plethora of evil creatures.

The film was originally conceived as a short by producer-director Muren—then titled The Equinox: Journey into the Supernatural—who developed and shot it with friends Dave Allen and Jim Danforth in 1967. After independent distributor Tonylyn Productions expressed interest in distributing the film, director Jack Woods was hired to direct additional footage and expand Muren's short into a full-length feature film.

Equinox initially gained a reputation as a midnight movie during its theatrical run, but has in later years been noted for its economical yet sophisticated use of stop-motion special effects and cel animation, which were provided by Dave Allen and Jim Danforth; the latter later worked on Flesh Gordon, in which he animated a giant monster similar to the ones in Equinox. The film has been influential to the horror and sci-fi monster genres, receiving praise from filmmaker George Lucas and special effects artist Ray Harryhausen; it was also noted as a main inspiration for Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead (1981). It was released on DVD by the Criterion Collection in 2006.

Konga 5000:

I have a LONG history with this movie: A classmate , during school lunch recess just saw this movie and  described the whole thing to me on the playground circa 1970/71 (!). Did not see it till 1976/77 on late night TV. Loved it! Then (early 1980s)  rented it a bunch of times when the VHS was re-titled "The Beast" (probably spent $2.99 to rent it half a dozen times). LOL. I cannot remember if there was a "budget" DVD of this in the 1990s (?) or I was watching a VHS to DVD transfer. Criterion did, a BREATH TAKING job with this ! Lost original footage not seen for DECADES !!  I loved how the guys that made this , only had one wish: that it would turn up on late night TV , thrilling people -- just as they were thrilled by Ray Harryhausen movies years earlier ! Perfect circle.

ChuckDeFuque:

I believe this was done as a school project. I think it was done over 2 semesters, If you notice some of the actors have put on weight and are wearing different outfits while supposedly in the same scene. At least that was what I was told back in the 70's.

Joseph (my comment):

I remember watching this as a child in the 70s on the old Bay Area Creature Features. The older black-and-white version gave it an eerie quality. They played this numerous times over the years, apparently because it was one of the local favorites. It was very memorable for this type of film, especially as strange and forboding as it was.

Jack Davide:

Thanks for this great post; it really brings back memories. The Harryhausen influence is strong...and I think Sam Raimi must have seen this film a few times. There's and Evil Dead vibe, too.

Titan52berg:

That red, flying bat-demon thing looked like the inspiration for the creeper!

Jeanine Wright:

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! My mom used to take me to see these movies and this was by far one of my favorites. Of course now you can critique everything about it but back then this was the shyt. Thank you for pulling this out of the vault.

Clay Schuetz:

Thankyou for the upload, and congratulations 😁
Now I know this movie is considered 100% cheese , however, the fact that it obviously was the inspiration for Evil Dead just as Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires was very much inspiration for Alien, makes it a rather unique and tasty bit of cheese.

Furthermore, it doesn't hurt that Dennis Muren it's creator would years later become an academy award winning effects artist.
Cheese, yes but again tasty cheese, I miss those late nights, staying up trying to catch some cheesy horror flick, filled with bad acting, horrid music and stop motion animated beasts.

Ahhh it is pleasant however that some people still appreciate these moldy oldies and that they bring them here for us to watch and enjoy, and for a few moments, we of the the generations past feel like kids again.
This was a blast, thankyou again 😁👍👍

Bears Kill Wolf In Dutch Zoo

1,138,998 views - October 31, 2018

Four bears killed a wolf in a zoo in Mierlo, the Netherlands. Visitors saw the incident happen. It is not clear why the bears attacked one of the wolves. The other wolves tried to stop the bears. The bears and wolves live in the same residence, because the zoo thinks it is an enrichment for both of them (this way they are challenged to get along, the zoo said).

One of the zookeepers said: “The bears and wolves usually get along well. They spend the days together and play regularly. But probably playing together got out of hand”.
