Corsican nationalism - A comparative examination

There are many similarities between Lombard nationalism and Corsican nationalism. Both had been clearly-defined cultural and linguistic regions prior to becoming part of other administrative states over time. Being small, they were both subject to falling under the thumb of larger, more powerful nations; France, Spain, Austria, etc. The only notable differences are that Corsica fell under France due to a clear act of military aggression in 1769, the whole of Corsica was under the sovereign Corsican Republic prior to that time, and lastly... that some Corsican nationalists finally resorted to terrorism starting in the 1970s. On the other hand, Lombardy was eased into the Italian state slowly; though the revolutions of the mid-nineteenth century. Also, the collective Lombard cultural-linguistic milieu was never officially part of the same state. Given a twist of fate, Corsica may well have ended up being part of the Italian state as well; Lombardy could well have ended up as part of a liberated Lombardo-Venetia--the former client state of the Austrian Empire--along with perhaps the Trentino region. Both of those possibilities would very likely have served them better than the status quo.

I had been mistakenly led to believe that Corsica was overwhelmingly "ethnic Corsican." Actually, as of 2011, only 56% of the population was even born in Corsica! That means that the Corsicans may well now be a minority in their own ancestral homeland. About 29% were born on the mainland of France (some could be returning Corsicans), and about 15% were born in North Africa. It reminds me of the line by English King Longshanks in the film 'Braveheart' in reference to the Scots: "If we can't get them out, we will breed them out." That's how the Fabian-symbiosis of Monopoly Capitalism and Social Marxism operate; they eliminate a people's identity first. Lombardy has a similar demographic situation; however having had a much larger population to begin with, it has been more difficult to push them out numerically.

Although certain elements within Corsican society are highly passionate about independence and possible nationhood, even moreso than in Lombardy; however, just as with other defeated peoples... most are melancholy when push finally comes to shove. In contrast, support for formal Lombard nationalism might even be greater overall. Still, nobody has ever traded bullets with the state, as has been the case in the Corsican conflict. The two main Corsican nationalist political parties are the left-wing Corsica Libera, and Party of the Corsican Nation. A distinction should be made between Socialist-Nationalists and open-borders Socialists. Socialist-Nationalists are concerned with issues such as nationalism, social welfare, and labor; while open-borders Socialists are concerned with a whole slew of separate issues which International-Capitalists have no real issue with.

While both lingo-cultural regions have legitimate political parties to address their issues and goals, Corsica has the militant National Liberation Front of Corsica. The "FLNC" came out of a number of terrorist groups which started in the 1970s. They bombed infrastructure and symbols of French rule until their proclamation of ending the armed period of their struggle in 2010. The FLNC has however stated that if Muslim extremists commit terrorist acts within Corsica, then they will respond to it. Just in general, the Corsicans have showed their displeasure at the increasing presence of Moroccans and other Muslims much more openly than has been the case in Lombardy. There has been terrorism in Lombardy, however it was due to something entirely different; namely "Operation Gladio," where the deep state committed false-flag terrorism in the name of fake Communist organizations to achieve an end. The "deep state" is an international milieu of well-placed rouge intelligence operatives controlled by Globalist elites to finally achieve their internationalist dream of one-world, one-government, one-race, etc.

I never could understand why Italian-Americans never took--even just a little bit--to the Corsican issue since it was so similar to the circumstance in Ireland. You could go into many Irish-American bars today and see signs on the wall "BRITS OUT OF IRELAND!!" Corsicans speak a dialect of Italian, they're Roman Catholic, and the island has had Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Lombard, and Italian influences throughout its history. It's very similar to Sardinia. It's definitely not "French," despite the fact that French has been installed as the official language. It's more "Southern Italian" in it's culture and sensibilities.

Venonetes, Camunni, Trumpilini, and the Roman victory monument of the Alps

Tropaeum Alpium

The Tropaeum Alpium (Latin for "Victory Monument of the Alps", French: Trophée des Alpes), was built by the Romans for the emperor Augustus to celebrate his decisive victory over the ancient tribes who populated the Alps. The monument's remains are in the commune of La Turbie (France), a few kilometers from the Principality of Monaco (Latin: tropaeum from Greek: tropaion whence English: "trophy").

Just like a master hunter's trophy room, inscribed within the remaining remnant of this ancient monument are forty-five Alpine tribes who engaged in war with the Roman army. There were others; some too small to mention, others elected not to fight. The clan factions from the movie 'Braveheart' come to mind. These Alpine and Celto-Gaulish tribes were the primary combatants resisting the Roman invasion in this particular war. Three out of the first four tribes inscribed were from the Brescian Tri-Valley (Camunni and Trumpilini) and the Valtellina/Valchiavenna (Vennonetes). These three tribes where not specifically Celto-Gaulish, but of the original Alpine tribes of pre-history. The overall forty-fives tribes were a mixture of Alpine and the historically more recent Celto-Gaulish.

According to the e-book 'Republic of Augustus',"The Venonetes (modern spelling) were regarded as one of the most warlike populations of the Alps." I have also read, reciting now from memory, that the Camunni and Trumpilini--in particular--fiercely fought the Roman army in this war. I don't think that it's any random act that these three tribes were listed among the first four inscribed on the stone within the Tropaeum Alpium by Pliny the Elder. It is not known why the third Brescian Tri-Valley tribe, the Sabini, were not listed. It is known that the Celtic tribe from the nearby Po flatlands south of the Alps, the Cenomani, elected to surrender rather than go against the invading Romans.

The Greek historian Strabo (63/64 BC–ca. 24 AD) described the Camunni as part of the Rhaetian peoples and related to the Celtic Leponti, while the Roman historian Pliny the Elder (23–79 AD), citing the Origines of Cato the Elder (234–149 BC), spoke instead of the Camunni as one of several tribes of the Euganei. The Rhaeti were originally a regional Alpine language grouping north of the Venonetes and Camunni, in what later became German-speaking regions. The Euganei were also Alpine people of what later became Italian-speaking regions. Later Celtic and Etruscan influence has, at times, created some confusion as to specific origins. It seems clear to me that the Venonetes, Camunni, and Trumpilini were basically Alpine tribal groups who all spoke the ancient Camunic language.

The Roman conquest

Val Camonica was subjected to Rome during the campaigns of Augustus to conquer Raetia and the Alpine arc, conducted by his generals Nero Claudius Drusus and Tiberius (the future emperor) against the mountain peoples in 16–15 BC. Publius Silius Nerva, governor of Illyricum, was to complete the conquest of the eastern Alpine front, which reached from the valley of Como to Lake Garda (therefore including the Valcamonica), in addition to the Vennoneti of Vinschgau.


The Camunni and Vennoni, Alpine tribes, took up arms against the Romans, but were conquered and subdued by Publius Silius.

After the Roman conquest, the Camunni were annexed to the nearest cities in a condition of semi-subjection through the practice of adtributio, which allowed them to maintain their own tribal constitution while the dominant city became the administrative, judicial, and fiscal center. The city that the Camunni were assigned to was probably Brixia. At first they were assigned the status of peregrinus, and then they obtained Roman citizenship; in the Flavian Age they were assigned to the Quirina tribe, while they maintained a certain self-government; in fact, a Res Publica Camunnorum has been recorded.

Romanization proceeded from Civitas Camunnorum (Cividate Camuno), a city founded by the Romans around 23 BC, during the principate of Tiberius. Beginning in the 1st century, the Camunni were included in stable Roman political and social structures, as evidenced by the numerous legionaries, artisans, and even gladiators of Camunian origins in several areas of the Roman Empire. Camunian religion went through the process of interpretatio Romana, forming a syncretic combination with Roman religion.

The Last Holdouts in Italy: Venonetes and Camunni

I wanted to add one more clue from the free e-book 'Republic of Augustus' (Guglielmo Ferrero; 1909). An important fact to consider is that after Caesar conquered Gaul, they still had not even conquered all of what is now modern Italy. Cisalpine Gaul was still free and sovereign. From the Roman perspective, the mountainous, wooded, dark, and foreboding Alps was filled with fearsome tribal groups in a hostile and difficult to navigate environment. I guess you could compare it to tribes in the Amazon or the Congo... only instead of thick, humid jungle, this was an ominous highlands of stone and wood.

This was well over forty years since the conquest of Gaul; the Emperor now being Augustus who perhaps wanted his own "conquest of the Gauls" just as Caesar had before him. Apparently a new revolt had sprung up in Gaul. Presumably there was some contact between the Gauls in what is now France, and the free Gaulish and Alpine tribes of the southern Alps. Roman General Publius Silus was invading from the east....

In the plains of Gaul the revolt had quickly died away, but in the Alpine districts the movement spread and increased in intensity. Publius Silus drove the Pannonians and the Norici from Istria, went down the valley of the Po, and made his way to the Valtellina and the Val Camonica to oppose the Venonetes and the Camunni. The appearance of his army, however, in no way deterred the insurgents.

There are now many interesting videos tying in CERN and the Gotthard Tunnel, as they both held elaborate ceremonies recently using clear Satanic-style imagery. Regardless of your belief system.. this is what "they" believe in... in elite circles. As I stated before, the Christian inquisitions of the Middle Ages actually created modern "Satanism" via the power of suggestion. They formed--willed into existence--a particular dark archetype that was desperately latched onto by some, and has been with us every since.

Most likely, thousands of years ago, Saturn was our "sun." After our small planetary group moved into this solar system, and especially with Saturn fizzling out and becoming a dwarf star, this led to warfare between the old Saturn-cults and the new Sun-cults. Christianity was born out've the Sun-cults, and they naturally adopted "Satan" (Saturn) as their cosmic villain. When they projected the evil of the inquisitions, they formed modern Satanism. This is not the same as modern manifestations of the old Saturn-cults.

I suppose in a fair world, we would revere the spirituality of all of our solar roots, including it's past manifestations. However, that's not whats happened. We are here and it is now... and we have to deal with the modern reality. "Satanism"--without a true original historical pantheon--must latch onto whatever it can for inspiration. Up to about three years ago, according to Wikipedia, "Cern" was an alternate name for Cernunnos. For some reason, that fact was dropped from that webpage. At this point, after all that has gone down, I think we can probably say that the name CERN was named after Cernunnos.

Even though Cernunnos, probably the chief god of ancient Gaul, had nothing to do with the Christian pantheon... this image was projected as "Satan" by Christian zealots (along with other horned fertility gods), and adopted by the Satanists themselves. CERN latches onto at least this perception of Satan (its name and 666 logo), the Hindu deity Shiva (their statue) and the Olympian god Apollo. The town in France where CERN is located is called "Saint-Genus-Poilly".... " originally "Appolliacum" after the god Apollo. This is because the people who lived there believed that it is a gateway to the underworld.

The Olympian god Apollo, the Gaulish god Cernunnos, the Hindu goddess Shiva, and the Christian Satan all have nothing to do with each other! Still, the scientists at CERN are like small children playing with dynamite. It's the ultimate irony, scientific-atheists more-or-less admitting to an unseen metaphysical world all around us. They're correct about that.

Although it may require some mental gymnastics to wrap one’s brain around exactly what the CERN scientists are attempting to achieve in their underground lab, the average layman may instinctively understand that such an experiment may be wrought with unforeseeable pitfalls. Stephen Hawking, the eminent physicist, seems to agree.

“The God particle found by CERN could destroy the universe,” Hawking wrote in the preface to a book, Starmus, a collection of lectures by scientists. The Higgs Boson could become unstable at very high energy levels and have the potential to trigger a “catastrophic vacuum decay which would cause space and time to collapse and… we would not have any warning to the dangers,” he continued.

Hawking is not the only voice in the scientific wilderness predicting possible catastrophe if CERN continues in the atomic fast lane. Astrophysicist Neil de Grasse Tyson told Eugene Mirman on his Star Talk radio program that the experiment could literally cause the planet to “explode.”

“Ask yourself: How much energy is keeping it together? Then you put more than that amount of energy into the object.” Tyson was confident of the result: “It will explode.”

In late 2008, when CERN was first firing up the engines on its atom-smashing machine, Otto Rossler, a German professor at the University of Tubingen, filed a lawsuit against CERN with the European Court of Human Rights, on the grounds that the facility could trigger a mini black hole that could get out of control and annihilate the planet. The Court tossed out Rossler’s request, but he nevertheless succeeded in generating heated discussion on the possible dark side of the experiment.



The "Mandela Effect"

We have tied-in here, CERN, the Gotthard Tunnel, and the "Mandela Effect." The Mandela Effect, which is all over YouTube and the internet, is the belief that the Large Hadron Collider has somehow distorted time and space. For example, certain parts of our past have changed a little. Although I personally don't believe it at this time, some of the examples are a bit disturbing.

In this, my 4th video on The Mandela Phenomenon, I combine the best of the best of what I have been able to find to date, to vent some of the anger and frustration victims (and YES, "victims" is the correct word to describe what folks experiencing the effect indeed are), are going through while at the same time attempt to point beyond any doubt, where the blame belongs for this atrocity. It boggles my mind how so many people who apparently are not experiencing the changes, can sit back and call the folks who are experiencing the changes Bat Shit Crazy! The way I see it there are basically 4 camps that exist: CAMP A: People who are experiencing "The Mandela Effect" and looking for answers. CAMP B: People who are either not sure if they are experiencing "The Mandela Effect", but just don't want to know if they actually are experiencing "The Mandela Effect", because of a deep seated fear of it and/or they fear of being ridiculed or have chosen to SECOND GUESS THEIR OWN MEMORIES as a method of self-preservation. I think this is what they call the FIGHT or FLIGHT syndrome and this group makes the choice to FLEE from the situation, rather then to stay and FIGHT, or ACCEPT it as being a real phenomenon. 

CAMP C: People who honestly have NO CHANGES to their memories. They are NOT experiencing ANY symptoms of "The Effect". Sometimes I wonder if the folks in CAMP C are somehow the LUCKEY ONES! And finally, we have CAMP D: The people who know what has happened. These would be the folks "IN THE KNOW", or people who actually work for, finance, or have something to do with CERN. I think this video will show the cat is pretty much out of the bag when it comes to WHO is behind this atrocity. Why do I use the word atrocity to describe the phenomenon? Because IMHO there is a definite EVIL twist to what has happened,... is happening.... (YES, it is still going on!!!) I find this whole thing to be with out a doubt a PREPOSTEROUS ABOMINATION!!! People have said things to me like; "What difference does it make?" "Why should you care when there is nothing you can do about it?" If that were not bad enough, I have had people tell me that I am DELUSINAL,... or that I have completely gone insane and need to seek help,... and MUCH, MUCH, worse things have been said,... as I'm sure anyone who has been victimized by "The Effect" reading this can attest to. I am OUTRAGED by this. I feel completely helpless and absolutely VICTIMIZED by this. 

NOW is the time for the people who are the actual VICTIMS of this "experiment gone bad" to fight back! But how?!? Can my previous reality be restored? Can what ever has been TURNED ON be TURNED OFF? Can Humpty Dumpty be put back together again? Will myself and millions of others be able to simply accept this NEW REALITY and go one with our lives like it never happened? I can not speak for the millions effected, but for myself, the answer to those questions if NO! So what can we do? Well for starters, we are already doing it... We can MAKE PEOPLE AWARE!!! I do it by making videos such as this one, and I also typed up a "MANDELA AWARENESS QUIZ", a simple 3-page question and information packet that I hand out to people I know. If you go about it the right way you can actually get people to realize what has happened without totally freaking them out in the process. 

Another thing I do is mention to people everywhere I go, I will ask people out in public if they ever heard of The Mandela Effect, and then when they say "NO" (which is just about 99.9% of the people I've asked the question have so stated), I will then ask them if they have Internet capability, (to which about 90% say "YES, THEY DO",... I will ask them to do me a favor and to type "MANDELA EFFECT" into the YouTube search engine and promise me they will watch 5 videos on the subject when they go home. lol! It might make me look crazy to many of COMPLETE STRANGERS I walk up to out in public, but believe it or not, the vast majority thus far have been very nice and respectful toward me when I do this! The corporate/government controlled/sponsored "main stream" media is NOT doing their job, (so what else is new), therefore it is up to you and I to do it for them. The FIRST step to getting answers, and bringing the perpetrators of this PREPOSTEROUS ABOMINATION to pay for their crimes id to wake as many people up as possible about it!

I don't really know why the Swiss elites used all ethnic Swiss/German performers here, since they're one of the European states that wants to displace its native population. Necromanteion

The Nekromanteion was an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Hades and Persephone. According to tradition, it was located on the banks of the Acheron river in Epirus, near the ancient city of Ephyra. This site was believed by devotees to be the door to Hades, the realm of the dead. The site is at the meeting point of the Acheron, Pyriphlegethon and Cocytus rivers, believed to flow through and water the kingdom of Hades. The meaning of the names of the rivers has been interpreted to be "joyless", "burning coals" and "lament."

Our date with destiny: September 23 - Part 1

This is one of those subjects in which.... the more you learn, the more you realize that there is to learn. Despite the American mainstream media's disinterest, there are a massive number of articles and videos regarding not only the Large Hadron Collider, but many other either real or incredibly coincidental mathematical and astronomical equations for the second half of this month. Even if---in some people's minds---"nothing happens," the activities of the particle collider alone is enough to make this period highly significant.

The Large Hadron Collider is a massive machine constructed by CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research). It was constructed 100 yards underground on the border of France and Switzerland. This machine, apparently the largest machine ever built, is a particle accelerator which literally smashes particles together at near the speed of light. The stated goals of this project include proving or disproving the Hoggs boson "god particle" theory, to apparently collect and store "anti-matter" (or "black matter"), and to attempt to recreate the conditions of the "Big Bang" theory.

In my opinion, there is a whole lot of good, bad, and everything else mixed in here. Just right off, Stephen Hawking is concerned that this endeavor could open up a black hole and possibly destroy the earth. When the first atomic bomb was exploded, those conducting the detonation were not certain that there would not be a chain reaction and result in the destruction of all life on the planet. They did it anyway, and "they" are going to do this anyway. Actually they've already done it, but in the next couple of weeks CERN will rev up that machine like never before. At full capacity, the Large Hadron Collider can smash protons together at a rate of a billion per second.

A "smoke portal" in the sky

When the collider has been rev'd up before, strange occurrences have taken places around the world, such as unidentified "smoke portals" and "spiral lights" in the sky. Apparently this anti-matter "interacts" with other anti-matter perhaps thousands of miles away. If that is true, then we are like children playing with dynamite. I think it's safe to say that even the mainstream consensus is that they don't really know what they're doing. That can be demonstrated in a quote from Sergio Bertolucci, Director for Research and Scientific Computing for CERN:

"Something may come through dimensional doors at LHC. And out of this door might come something, or we might send something through it.”

Yes, we may be opening a door to another dimension or parallel universe. That would be strange or scary enough by itself. However, clearly those in charge of CERN and/or it's financiers have--at the least--a fetish for the Indian goddess Shiva, the Gaulish god Cernunnos (also known as "Cern"), the Greco-Roman god Apollo, and other ancient eclectic pagan "inspiration." I mean, when uniformed engineers at CERN wearing blue hard hats are doing a "Shiva dance," someone's trying to make some kind of statement. Shiva, a goddess of destruction, is depicted as the statue at CERN headquarters; the official logo of CERN is a variant of "666," and the collider itself is built on the site of an ancient town that was dedicated to the god “Apollyon” in Roman times. Could this all be more than mere fetish? That's up to you to decide.

One article, which gives a good short breakdown of the collider in September, is entitled 'Will CERN Open Up a Doomsday Portal in September?' (TruthLamp.com - August 17, 2015); another is 'Occultic CERN: Physicist Claims Large Hadron Collider May Open Portal To Another Dimension' (Michael Snyder - FreedomOutpost.com - August 12, 2015). Even though the Gaulish horned god Cernunnos has nothing to do with "the Devil" of Christianity, a fetishist might make that connection anyway. Even though the Greco-Roman god Apollo had nothing to do with the Devil or Satan either; again, a fetishist, occultist, or Christian could still make the connection.... in the Bible, a demonic entity known as Apollyon (Abaddon) is a “destroyer” who will emerge out of a bottomless pit during end times events:

“They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.” -Revelation 9:11

Random thoughts on day of Mother Cabrini's Sainthood

Lombard-born Mother Cabrini became the first American Saint on this day in 1946. I just wanted to post a few random things for no particular reason. I wonder if Mother Cabrini could be considered part of Ambrosian culture? Probably not, since it is only considered a liturgy; which is why is was allowed in the first place. The beautiful Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden, Colorado is on my to-visit-list. I want to walk up that long stairway to the sky.

Mother Cabrini loved the mountains of Colorado. The foothills west of Denver held a special attraction for her. During her journeys in 1902 to visit the Italian workers and their families in the Clear Creek, Argentine, and South Park mining districts, Frances X. Cabrini discovered a property on the east slope of Lookout Mountain owned by the town of Golden.

Last week I watched two mystery/horror movies with intriguing names. 'Wicker Park' was a movie that, according to reviews, people either liked or disliked with no in-between. My vote is nay. Mungo Lake was an Australian supernatural flick. I'll lean toward yay on that one.

Harbaugh-Cowherd interview

Coffee'd up radio sports personality ambushes coach at 6 AM, resulting in an awkward interview. Sociologically, I found this to be interesting. I've found Jim Harbaugh to be very personable, yet somehow is frequently judged as being the opposite. No matter how passionate one may be regarding any subject or interest, they could just draw a blank with a phony line of questioning. You can't always be on your A-Game.. Many people prefer more of a fake immediate-best-buddy sort of person over even a more genuine personality. It's probably split right down the middle with people at large; but I'll always take the latter.

Jaws - 40 Years

Every year one of the cable networks has a "Shark week" special from Sunday to Saturday. This week it's the Discovery channel, with non-stop shark programs and documentaries. On the American Movie Classics channel yesterday, they aired off of the "Jaws movies." Apparently the iconic movie and the shark craze in general is associated with the Fourth of July and the real kick off of summer, just as in the 1975 movie. I remember when I was very young in the summer of 75, the media, entertainment, and commercial blitz all about sharks. This seemed to last several years; and the movie has created a lasting fascination with sharks. It was a great movie, and an equally great soundtrack. It all seemed to lead to "the hunt" towards the end.

I recall visiting cousins back in the midwest, and the ones my age were equally fascinated with the movie; and we "reinacted" it along the lake there, just as I had with friends at home. We would form something that would serve as the vessel from the movie and pretend, often reciting some of the lines from the film. Remember, this was even before VCRs, much less the internet and all the rest. If someone loved a movie, they could buy the soundtrack, the book, posters, and memorabilia... everything except the film. In those scenes were Robert Shaw was singing and looking like he was enjoying himself lots... he was actually buzzed as it turns out. The 70s had all those original mega-hit movies.

Ancient underground chamber found under someone's house

I just saw this today: 'Ancient Ritual Bath Found Under Unsuspecting Family's Floorboards'. Just the concept that someone would discover that their home was thousands of years old would be strange enough. The photo of the steps leading down is so bizarre. It doesn't even have to be ancient. Portland, Oregon has some places where there are walkways and rooms that have been discovered deep down into the earth. Seattle has it's underground city, where the "old city" was built upon.

Felines are not canines!

I don't know why people insist in trying to "breed cats." For example, the munchkin cats. Cats are perfect the way they are, and they already are a small and relatively short-legged animal. Why purposely breed in a birth defect? They don't have genes like wolves. Other irresponsible breeding includes mixing housecats and bobcats. Those genes for a large powerful animal don't just disappear. Also, who's bright idea was it to hybridize big cats? A liger (lion-tiger mix) cannot survive in the wild due to it's massive size; so should ligers be allowed to mate with other lions or tigers? There are many other such mixes. The Leopon (lion-leopard mix) is not a beautiful animal....

Princess Gisla's angry speech" was from the last episode and scene from this past 'Vikings' season three. The Parisian princess was being forced into a marriage with regional Viking chief Rollo. I have mixed feelings, as part of me wants to laugh at her speech and pouty and disgusted appearance; while at the same time it's against my own spiritual beliefs to laugh at someone's pain.. even if they're an adversary. In other words, it's only funny if it's not you. However, with Rollo's fur clad appearance, his own greeting to her in French, and followed by his large grin, I think the scene was intended on being subtly humorous. Beyond the production itself, the two actors would be a good genetic match. In any case, excellent acting by the actress Morgane Polanski. One of the YouTube commenters, apparently a French speaker, said that this was "old French." France is like Italy in that there were numerous languages in the Middle Ages, after which only one was instituted. Someone cleverly put together a video called 'Rollo and Gisla: Empire of Our Own' with footage from the series.

'How It's Made: Dream Cars' - Bugatti Veyron

I still think of Bugatti as having a tie-in with the company's Milanese founders, Ettore Bugatti and his family. Certainly the legacy has a Milanese spirit. Bugattis, in all of their forms, are truly a work of mechanical and artistic genius. I love the old ads, which are something of an art form in of themselves. The company today is headquartered in France, and owned by Volkwagon.

Most reading the charming reprinting of Charles Leland’s Aradia, Gospel of the Witches easily forget how far we are from rural Italy in the 19th century,  from the world inhabited by those who remember the Ancient Ways, perhaps more telling, how far we are from the lives of the dispossessed in our own time.  Leland’s disarming erudition of Margherita Taluti’s information lulls us into gentle repose, arrested only by the sudden bursts of light when the reality of Margherita’s world sneaks through our contemporary dream.

“In those days there were on earth many rich and many poor.

The rich made slaves of all the poor.

In those days were many slaves who were cruelly treated; in every palace tortures, in every castle prisons.

Many slaves escaped. They fled to the country; thus they became thieves and evil folks. Instead of sleeping by night, they plotted escape and robbed their masters, and then slew them. So they dwelt in the mountains and forest as robbers and assassins, all to avoid slavery.”
  
An educated Western audience may find it uncouth that such things would be spoken aloud, but they aren’t spoken aloud, they are passed in secret, sub-rosa, in silence. Leland’s passion for various groups on the fringes of the society of his day, the Romany, the Native American, American Voodoo and European witches, gave him a strong sense of Romanticism for the struggles of the people, and provides him with the raw materials for an invocation of this struggle through his writing.

This is not the genteel voice of an educated Marxist lamenting capitalism, nor the hopeful philosophies of Utopian sustainability, this is Lex Talonis, justice driven by the Left Hand under the auspices of Divine Right. This is the uninhibited outcry of those who labor, live and die without ever seeing the fruits of their work, and watching daily while an uncaring elite sit in abstract control over their destinies.

During the Haitian Revolution in the late 18th century, escaped slaves met in the mountains and gathered strength while plotting to overthrow the Colonial French. During a ceremony in the northern mountains at Bois Caiman, which has since passed into a national myth, the freedom fighters called on the gods of their homeland to give them strength, protection and the vigor to overthrown their oppressors.

According to accounts of the ceremony “a woman started dancing languorously in the crowd, taken by the spirits of the loas. With a knife in her hand, she cut the throat of a pig and distributed the blood to all the participants of the meeting who swore to kill all the whites on the island.”

An interesting thing about Leland is that he’s writing from a place of experience. He was active during the American Civil War, both as a propagandist and journalist for the North and as a soldier, and was in Paris during the French uprising in 1848 where he participated in street fighting against the Royalist supporters.

In all of these revolutionary moments, however, we must be honest and recognize that the people do not stir on their own cognizance.  Even the Haitian revolution was spurred on by educated Haitians who invoked the power of their traditions to stir the people.  It takes someone to spark the collective consciousness, and that someone is more often than not a sympathetic member of the literati.
