Lynn Anderson

Lynn Rene Anderson was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on September 26, 1947, to Casey and Liz Anderson. Her grandparents were Scandinavian immigrants who established a North Dakota "saddle club". According to Anderson, she could ride horses before she could walk. While she was still a young child, the family relocated to a subdivision in Fair Oaks, California. However, Anderson insisted that her parents move to a ranch, prompting the family to move to Sacramento, California. In Sacramento, the Anderson family bought a ranch with two acres of land. The family raised horses, which she learned how to ride and care for. At the age of nine, Anderson won second place at a local horse-racing event in San Francisco, California. Lynn also became interested in performing from an early age. Both her parents were aspiring songwriters that had formed friendships with west country performers. Her performing and musical interests continued into high school. During her teens she landed a job working as a secretary for KROY in Sacramento. Upon graduating, she became the station's secretary to the general manager.

While working full-time, Lynn continued entering equestrian competitions. Once winning several competitions, she was dubbed the "California Horse Show Queen" in 1966. While watching her daughter at these events, Liz Anderson was also composing songs. She sent her compositions to Los Angeles and Nashville, Tennessee, where they were heard by music executives. Among the songs heard was "(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers", which was recorded by Merle Haggard in 1964. The song led producer Chet Atkins to Liz to a recording contract at RCA Victor. This prompted the family to relocate to Nashville. Before officially moving, Liz took a brief trip with her daughter to Nashville in 1965. At a hotel, mother and daughter performed in an informal sing-along with several other artists. Also present at the sing-along was producer Slim Williamson. Impressed by her vocals, Williamson offered Lynn a recording contract of her own. In 1966, she signed her first recording contract with Chart Records.

On the desolate north bank of the Payne Estuary, 15 miles above the village of Payne Bay, near the west coast of Ungava Bay, northern Quebec, Canada, there is a very curious ancient monument resembling Thor’s Hammer.

The monument is a two-ton stone structure, about 8 feet high, and measures 4-1/2 feet across at its pointed lintel, surmounted by a 14-inch-high capstone. It is unknown who raised the monument, and there is some dispute about its builders.

The structure was discovered in 1964 by archaeologist Thomas E. Lee during an anthropological expedition to Ungava. Lee was struck by its roughly Nordic design and dubbed it “the Hammer of Thor.”

God Thor is considered a hero of the Vikings, and his hammer has long been the Vikings’ amulet of protection and power. Thor is often depicted with Mjölnir, a magical hammer in his hand.

If you happen to be in the area around Banff, maybe try the Ticino Swiss Italian Restaurant. The town of Banff has a population of 7,847 and looks like a combo of Aspen and South Lake Tahoe. I can't vouch for this restaurant, but it looks like it has some regionally specific Ticinese recipes. I didn't see one item I remember from Ticinese cuisine... roasted ferret.

California dry season

One year ago, California was officially declared out of it's seven year drought. However, currently 59% of the state is abnormally dry. Unlike most states, California has a normal virtually rain-free six-month dry season from approximately the start of May through October. This week, The Lake Erie Murders examines the death of a nun in a hospital chapel in Toledo, Ohio, in 1980. Sister Margaret Ann Pahl’s body was found on the floor of the vestibule of the former Mercy Hospital on Holy Saturday, a day before Easter. It was also a day before her 72nd birthday.

Her killer was a priest, Father Gerald Robinson, who was the chaplain at the hospital. Church historians have said this is the only recorded case of a priest murdering a nun.

A particularly gruesome murder

An autopsy revealed that Sister Margaret Ann had been choked to the edge of death before being stabbed in the head, neck, and face. She had been draped with an altar cloth, and nine of her stab wounds were in the shape of an upside-down cross. There was a smear of blood across her forehead as if she had been anointed in the last rites.

Robinson was questioned at the time, and investigators had their suspicions, but the case went cold due to a lack of evidence. However, the case was reopened in 2003 after a woman accused Robinson of sexually assaulting her when she was a child; these charges were dropped, but police looked again at the evidence from the 1980 murder.

In a recent broadcast of Investigation Discovery's 'The Lake Erie Murders', in an episode entitled 'Black Sabbath', the 1980 case of "Murder of Margaret Ann Pahl" was featured. Father Gerald Robinson, if he was truly guilty, was proof of a Roman Catholic Priest who also happened to be a dark-occult Satanic murderer. Even today---even with all the problems in the church, even with known dark occult practices in high places---this seems almost unfathomable. It's like a Fire Chief being an arsonist!

As covered here before, there are different types of Satanism, of which Father Robinson was of the very worse kind: The practice of evil based on a willful antagonism against Biblical Christianity. The crime clearly had the marks, including an upside down cross, of a ritual murder. It should also be stated that more than a few people believe him to be innocent of the charges. Anyone who follows true crime must have their one favorite "innocent but convicted" case. Even if I entertained one ounce of a thought that he might be innocent, his courtroom manner of what appeared to be total indifference would have been the sealer for me. He couldn't have looked more guilty if he tried! His double-life and it's dramatic contradictions makes this case truly bizarre.

"Middle Eastern" is a somewhat sloppy definition of Loreena McKennitt's inspiration from Celtiberian Spain, later Islamic Spain; and the "Keltoi" of Asia Minor, later Islamic Turkey. She musically combined the mysteries of the Celtic peoples and Islam on a couple of her albums. Her music has been perhaps more Celtic-oriented than Neopagan, but I still think of it as having a strong tie-in. The expanded definition of "Celtic culture" would include probably most of ancient Europe, including ancient Iberia, Asia Minor, Poland, Gemany, Italy, etc. Loreena McKennitt is a treasure.

Thanks to a rhyme learned in grade school, many people believe that Columbus discovered America in 1492. Leif Erikson Day - October 9

One interesting difference between Christopher Columbus and Leif Erikson was that Erikson was a Heathen (Odinist, Asatruar, etc.). The Vikings were the last great European Pagan Nation. I use the term "pagan" loosely, as it was only used in this manner centuries later when "native believers" were relegated to the countryside. Leif Erikson, the Viking colony of Vinland (or Vinnland), and the symbolic but fictional flag of Vinland could all have a folk-religious type of meaning... beyond a Scandinavian ethno-cultural meaning. I suppose we can explicitly state that Leif Erikson is a Heathen/Pagan hero. There have been some interesting Leif Erikson Day festivals on the east coast of the U.S. and Canada in recent years. In a strange way, he is still very much an overlooked figure. He was present here in North America a thousand years ago.

Columbus Day - October 10

I didn't want to turn this posting into a why Columbus is hated and Erikson is praised discussion. Naturally we have historical ties to Columbus' Genoese roots, and he sailed under the flag of SPAIN. Why aren't social justice warriors and La Raza people mad at Spain? I guess it's pretty obvious why that would never work. It's hard to discuss Columbus at all without acknowledging his new Emanuel Goldberg-status. Columbus served at the pleasure of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He couldn't set policy without their approval. Spain discovered America for the West and Christianity.

Alaska reminds me of what a Heathen dreamland in its pristine state would be like. This is mainly because it's so large, and unlike far northern places like Greenland.. it's often so sunny, wooded, and green. There's an uplifting spirit to it.

Recipe from Valtellina - "Pizzoccheri alla Valtellinese"

Here it is; the Italian recipe using homemade buckwheat noodles that I mentioned earlier. All the recipes I found were very consistent, but being me I have made some changes. The main one was to add some carrots. I thought they would fit in well with the flavour profile and add some much-needed colour. I didn't put toasted bread crumbs on top, but our assessment of the dish was that although it was very tasty, the texture was just a tad soft and stodgy, and crisp bread crumbs would add just enough of a different texture. They are not absolutely necessary, however.

The original cheese to use is Valtellina Casera, which you will not find around here. Friulano should make an excellent substitute. All the recipes I saw cooked the garlic with the sage then removed and discarded it, which seems a bit precious to me for what is basically peasant chow. Not to mention that I have put much effort into growing and storing that garlic, and I'm eating it, damn it. I have also streamlined the process a bit; mixing everything together rather than layering it in bowls. Friulano melts pretty quickly, so don't mix it for more than a minute or so, but I do think that mixing it in the pot will give you better melting than just layering the ingredients.

Swiss chard is often used in this dish, but cabbage, kale, or spinach will work just as well, meaning this dish could be made pretty much all year long using whichever green was most seasonal, although I don't really see it as a middle-of-the summer kind of thing. On the other hand, given the last couple of cool, rainy summers; maybe.

2 servings, or 4 servings
20 minutes prep time, assuming the noodles are made

Advance Preparation:
1/2 recipe buckwheat noodles, cut into short pieces
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1/2 cup coarse, fairly dry bread crumbs

Make the noodles according to the recipe, at least 2 hours before preparing the rest of the dish, and let them sit out on the counter to get a bit dry.

Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat, and toast the crumbs in it until they are lightly browned and quite crisp. Turn them out onto a plate to cool, and set them aside until needed.

Finish the Dish:
1 medium potato (1 cup when diced)
1 medium carrot (1 cup when diced)
1 medium onion
4 cups chopped green or Savoy cabbage, Swiss chard, kale, or spinach
3 or 4 cloves of garlic
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
100 grams (4 ounces) diced Friulano cheese
30 grams (1 ounce) finely grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon rubbed dry sage
OR 3 or 4 fresh sage leaves
salt & freshly ground black pepper to taste

Put a large pot of salted water on to boil.

Wash and trim the potato (or peel it if you do that kind of thing), and cut it into 1/2" dice. Peel and trim the carrot, and cut it into slightly smaller dice. Peel and chop the onion. Wash, trim and chop the cabbage or other greens fairly coarsely. Peel and mince the garlic.

When the water comes to a boil, add the carrots and potatoes, and boil them for 8 minutes. Add the buckwheat noodles, and continue cooking for another 5 to 7 minutes, until the noodles are tender.

About 5 minutes after the carrots and potatoes have been started, heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. If using fresh sage, fry them briefly in the butter, then remove them - you can save them as a garnish if you like. Add the onion, and cook for 2 or 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the cabbage, and mix in well, stirring regularly to keep it cooking down evenly. After 3 or 4 minutes of cooking the cabbage, add the garlic, and the dry sage if that is what you are using. Mix well, and let cook for a few more minutes while the noodles cook. Use this time to dice and grate the cheeses. Mix the grated Parmesan with the prepared bread crumbs.

When the noodles are ready, drain them and return them to the pot over medium-low heat. Quickly mix in the diced Friulano cheese and the vegetables from the skillet. Stir for just a minute, until you see signs the cheese is melting. Turn it at once into a serving dish, or divide it amongst individual dishes, and sprinkle with the Parmesan and bread crumbs. Serve at once.

Daniel Updike of Northern Runes Radio interviews Larisa Hunter, founder of folk-pagan themed publishing company startup "Saga Press. Both are Asatruar and Canadian, and linked to the Asatru community on the West Coast of the U.S. These are two people who have really "done something" productive, and to the benefit of their community. A person has to be dedicated, because they're not going to make much money. I was disappointed to see a couple of other such publishing companies go out of business.

NRR is out of beautiful Alberta, Canada. I like to see representation in that province. I recall Hengest, the head of the Court of Gothar of the Odinic Rite, visited there some years ago and was impressed. The Odinic Rite's two North American headquarters are in the Pacific Northwest (British Columbia and Washington state). Anyway, this is a positive development. "Vote" with your pocketbook. There are some very creative authors represented.

The Lombard migration in North America: Part 1

The Lombard migration in North America

Interview with Ernesto Milani, historian and scholar of the Lombard migration in North America.

A wide-ranging interview with Ernesto Milani, historian and scholar of emigration from England to the United States and Canada: from Missouri to Vermont, from Illinois to Ontario, keeping Lombard roots alive.

What is your training under the Lombard immigration historical research in the United States?

I wrote my thesis on Italian mutual aid societies in the United States, in particular research work on the Lombard Association in Boston, Subalpina Mutual Society. Then I commenced to collect books, postcards and other material on the subject.

The first important work I've done has been on the Italian emigration (in particular, Marchigian and Venetian southern plantations of the Mississippi). From that date onwards, I have done a lot of research on the topic.

Also attended by 1976 the Hague, Italian-American Association and I have contacts with historians who make up this important Association.

How is the map of the Lombards in the United States?

The Lombards who arrived in the United States in the years of mass emigration were mostly miners and laborers. The main destinations to which this emigration was focused are St. Louis, Missouri, Herrin and Rockford, Illinois, Barre, Vermont, Iron Mountain, Michigan, Walla Walla, Washington, and then in Texas, in San Francisco (in particular in the area of San Rafael), in New Mexico and Arizona.

In Canada, however, focused in Ontario, in coal mines on the border between Alberta to British Columbia, and along the railway linking Montreal to Victoria.

The strongest emigration was from 1880 to 1920. Just to give you an example that gives the measure of the importance of the phenomenon, from Cuggiono left toward New York Harbor about 1,700 people in an era when this country had approximately 4000 people (Lombards?).

In Canada, emigration has been strong even after the war, especially from the province of Brescia and Bergamo.

How organized are Lombard associations in the United States?

There is a certain organization, but is less than elsewhere. My experience tells me that most organized associations are those of St. Louis and Harrin, where the presence of Lombard miners was very strong. St. Louis was indeed a "little Italy," and often associations were born to create mutual aid institutions, so as to share a doctor in town for example.

In what form is the Lombard identity within these communities?

The Lombard tradition in any form is maintained: for example in St. Louis there is a church dedicated to Saint Ambrose. Lombard values are family values that are conserved. Often there remains a certain knowledge of the dialect, perhaps there remains nicknames that you give people. In addition, today these are often found in Lombardy, in their region of origin, and this helps strengthen ties. This is even more true if we consider that today, rediscovering Lombardy is no longer a negative, but is part of their lives.

In Canada the preservation of identity is more relevant, since the Lombards were always less in number.

What is the social and economic situation of our emigrants?

It's hard to generalize. In any case, in St. Louis, for example, the integration was very slow, the Italians were workers until the end of World War II. Since then, things have changed and the Italians today work in all different occupations.

Of course, our communities are very engaged in catering, according to the Italian tradition in general.

Were there prejudices (positive or negative) in relation to our communities, when they arrived and began to integrate into the local social fabric?

Maybe there was, and it was more in the American South, otherwise the Lombards were not affected that much by this factor. For example, Ellis Island (the island that functioned as sorting station for immigrants in New York) the Italians on arrival were divided between southerners and northerners, and also within the north (Italy) there were differences, whereby for example the Trentini were sorted along with Tyrol.

The Lombard migration to the United States is a topic that seems to have been insufficiently studied by academia. Could more studies be carried out to give a more complete picture of this subject?

Studies are numerous but more at the individual level and provincial staff. There is also the problem of saving accounts, and this information is being lost to the point that it is now too late to intervene. The obvious reason for this is that these stories are lost when people disappear that handed down orally.

And the Lombard migration today in the United States?

It's totally different. This is an emigration of professionals, researchers, teachers or people who have implanted. There is also the emigration of those who want to change his life and put to the test in completely new environments. We are not talking about large numbers, but it is in any case a phenomenon as well.

The flags that we use

We use the Canadian flag for a number of reasons. First, we see it as a symbol of the entire continent. Because we are so small in number, and are so spread out, localization is not practical as it is with some of the Camunian Folk Association (Associazione Gente Camuna) groups in a few European cities. In this way, people of Camunian descent, whether in Pennsylvania, Florida, California, or Quebec, can feel connected to our unique folk family concept. Other reasons include a symbol of Canada and it's huge land mass, which along with Alaska, make up most of the continent. Also, when looking at a the earth, it symbolizes the great white north in a sense.

We can view ourselves, beyond a regional or ethnic group, as a large family spread out over a vast land mass. We would like someone in Anchorage to feel just as connected to us as someone in Chicago. Let us think of the entire continent, from the Aleutian Islands to the Panama Canal, as possibly where our Euro-Camunian kindred may be living or working

The other flag over on the top left, is a modern colorized flag based on the symbol of the ancient city of "Cividate Camuna" from Roman times. The Romans, after conquering the region, formed administrative cities like this to tie them into the empire. It showed that the Romans clearly saw the Camonica Valley as a distinct region.
