Wakefield (2016 film)

....based on the short story of same name by E. L. Doctorow, which was in turn inspired by the 1835 story of the same title by Nathaniel Hawthorne.... this story made for and adapted well into a very different type of film. This is a good film. I suppose different people would have very different reactions to it. In short, it was about a very successful NYC attorney, with a beautiful home and two children in the suburbs, who sort've fell upon the idea to hide out in an attic for at least two or three months.... apparently to watch what occurs. "The plot thickens" as he said as the chaos of his absence began (the character narrates the experience). Basically he and his wife were having some serous social-interaction issues to the point of even questioning each others' character on some level. Since I didn't take any notes, I am unable to delve into that; however that part is complex, and most of the negativity that he may have attached to his wife was from his own false perceptions. For example, he used "jealousy" to arouse himself and had her role play it.... in other words, he planted that seed. Also, he wasn't close to his two young daughters... as he hardly even saw them.

At certain points, I thought of him at merely a very well-to-do guy who wanted some type of chaos or excitement. However it came about, he goes through a spiritual awakening. If even just through the pragmatic activity of his newfound existence (ex. eating from garbage containers), he embraces an element of piety. His initial encounter with raccoons symbolizes his new reality; his new unkempt beard almost seems to symbolize that he's living like an animal or that he's living like a raccoon. With that, he experiences a different type of freedom. Scenes showing his workplace of a downtown in NYC in relation to his home, which appears almost rural-suburban was not lost upon me... and may have symbolized something. Maybe that he went from the king of the downtown skyline to living like a raccoon... or getting back to nature... back to simpler things. He took a train to work, which also seemed to imply that his home may have been forty or fifty miles away... from skyline to treeline.

At some point he's discovered by two developmentally disabled teens or young adults who were living next door to him. He befriends them, and has some fun and laughs with them. Prior to that, he felt animosity towards the neighbor who was sponsoring them; in other words, he may well have thought of them as unworthy of his time. However now he was enjoying their simple friendship; very different from the cutthroat relationships that he engaged in downtown. He saw the comparative innocence in their nature and valued it. He told them to keep quiet about him living there, and they did. Later, he asked them not to come around as it was getting too risky for him. However, soon he was feeling ill and was hungry.. and they brought him food. He was moved by their kindness.

He observes all of the goings-on from the circular top story window (symbolizing a "portal," at times glowing in the dark room) of the family's garage unit across the street, which seems to have been on the third floor. So he was socially very far from his hub in downtown NYC, and even far enough away from the home unit to observe in private. There's one point where he is walking along at night amid the tall trees, with bright street lamps shining magnificently around them, and he says "I never left my family. I left myself. Unshackled, I will become the Howard Wakefield I was meant to be." In a roundabout way, life, responsibilities, and pressure in a big city can be like wearing shackles. Everything is about the politic... people don't really even know themselves. He mentions at one point that he was seeing his children more than he ever had before, and finally he sees his wife rejecting the advances of one adversarial colleague of his... and she never does cheat on him.

At one point he says that he loves his wife much more "now".. than he ever had before. Many didn't like the ending, which leaves it up to the imagination. Bryan Cranston plays Howard Wakefield, and is a very good actor; and Jennifer Garner plays his wife Diana Wakefield, and is a good actress when she's not talking baby-talk in Capital One commercials. As far as wondering what finally occurred, I wonder if it was something like what transformed in the film "Regarding Henry', where a jerk attorney was shot in the head and had to start over again.. and became a different person, then loved by his young daughter whom he has been distant. Also, I love the concept of mood-changing different comparative environments; the films 'Copland' and 'Unfaithful' come to mind.

'The Shallows' is a survival thriller, maybe not as deep as others that come to mind for me--such as 'Jeremiah Johnson', 'Jaws' or 'The Edge'--but I liked it. Blake Lively plays the part of a medical student who is taking a trip by herself down to Baja California (actually filmed in Australia) to surf; to the same secluded beach that her recently passed-away mother had visited when she was pregnant with her. So it starts with a life-transforming experience that soon becomes explicitly so. There's more to her personal life that more defines why this trip is important to her; mostly revolving around the fact that she was very affected by her mother's death.

This was an interesting role for Lively because clearly this woman has a certain energy to her; much more than being pretty or sexy, Blake Lively is just plain cool.. without even trying. Years ago an older man said to me that he thought Burt Reynolds was the only cool person in Hollywood; I would suggest now that Blake Lively is the only cool person in Hollywood. Often that doesn't translate well to this type of role beyond mixing danger with sex appeal for box office success. However, I think she did a very good job here. This was a very brutal film that keeps one at the edge of their seat through a large part of it. One interesting nuance is the presence of a small injured sea gull, whom she befriends while stranded on a rock... and even pushes its wing back into its socket. I don't want to give too much away since it would take away from the thrill of the film.

The film, although some aspects of it may be something of a stretch, brought out the brutal side of nature. Several weeks ago I was watching one of those white butterflies out the window, which to me represent a certain serenity.... then abruptly a small bird took off after it; eventually catching it and landing on a tree branch to finish the meal.... brutal. The movie has lots of blood and death, but delivered in a slow methodical manner. I think just the above description from the trailer says it all. Just like the massive Kodiak bear from 'The Edge', this Great White Shark symbolizes the brutal side of nature... and was literally a "monster."

There are also some frantic moments where she must endure and treat severe injury, so it gets rather intense. The ending scene is in some way, similar to the ending scene in 'Jaws'... you remember... "I used to hate the water"....... "I can't imagine why"...... danger over, back to nature's tranquility. Also, the protagonist's easy nature in such sharp contrast with this killing machine.

We are in The Clearing. The trees stop in a uniform oval where nothing grows and where, since official records began, nothing has grown. “Once when I came here,” says Alex, our guide, “I found 60 people from Bucharest trying to open a gate into another dimension.”

This is Hoia Baciu, just outside Cluj-Napoca, Romania’s second city in the depths of Transylvania. It has been called the creepiest forest in the world. And The Clearing is, allegedly, the creepiest place in the forest. It defies the investigations of soil scientists and attracts Romanian witches, sword-wielding Americans, and people who try to cleanse the forest of evil through the medium of yoga.

In the English-speaking world, the words “Transylvania” and “Halloween” conjure up a pre-Twilight Edward Cullen scaling the walls of his castle. But tourists coming to Romania for a Dracula experience are likely to leave disappointed. Romania is resistant to the Dracula legend. His namesake – Vlad Dracul or, more commonly, Vlad the Impaler – is a national hero.  And Bran Castle, the most explicitly Dracula-themed attraction, has only a tenuous connection to Stoker’s creation, plus the priggish feel of a National Trust property. So here I am, on a night-time tour of the Hoia Baciu Forest, trying to find a real fright in autumnal Transylvania.

"Breaking the Folk Spirit" - How folk cultures are easily subjugated after their gods are destroyed

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin, also known as Cusco Cathedral, is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cusco. The cathedral is located on the Plaza de Armas. Building was completed in 1654, almost a hundred years after construction began.

Kiswarkancha

The Incas built the temple known as Kiswarkancha on the main square in Cusco. It was the Inca palace of Viracocha, ruler of the Kingdom of Cusco around a century before the Spanish colonists arrived. The aboriginal name of this city was Qusqu. Although it was used in Quechua, its origin has been found in the Aymara language. The word itself originated in the phrase qusqu wanka ("Rock of the owl"), attending to the foundational myth of the Ayar siblings.

Near to the Kiswarkancha was the Suntur Wasi, an armoury and heraldry centre for the Inca royalty. When the Spanish conquistadores arrived in Cuzco, they decided to take down the temple and build their Christian cathedral in that prominent site.

The cathedral's construction began in 1559 on the foundations of Kiswarkancha. It is shaped like a Latin cross. The location of Viracocha's palace was chosen for the purpose of removing the Inca religion from Cusco, and replacing it with Spanish Catholic Christianity. Because 1559 was only 26 years after the conquistadores entered Cusco in 1533, the vast majority of the population was still of Quechua Inca descent. The Spaniards used the Incas as a labour workforce to build the cathedral.

The Method

One of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time; how did less than 200 Spanish soldiers defeat an Inca Empire in the millions? There were about 40,000 actual Incas who systemically ruled over many other tribal regions who were like Inca provinces. Ironically, the Incas were actually, in some ways, guilty of what I'm pointing out in this piece. Their god was put above all others, although I don't know if they actually suppressed other traditions. In any case, they were a powerful empire who could easily raise a standing army of a quarter of a million. Their capitol was Cusco, as well as the location of their main temple. It's interesting that the Spanish kept the name "Cusco," but the folk tradition had to go. Jesus was to have said "Conquer in my name," and they did it. No more Viracocha. In this way their actions were similar to the Romans' M.O.; to replace and/or smother out the old ways of a conquered people.

This Roman method was a relatively soft way of pacifying a defeated people. Sometimes it was even a way of pacifying sovereign allies, such as with some Germanic tribes. For example, they would conflate Wotan with their god Mercury; then recruit some of them into their own military ranks. The Spaniards of Peru seemed to use some of the tricks out of the old Roman game plan; only in this case they decided to explicitly bury the old Inca spiritual tradition. Since you can't eliminate "a place," they decided to replace/"smother" out the the temple. While Muslims used brutal methods, Christians often used deception. The developing theory is that the Spaniards benefited from a period of growing discontent within the Incan "provinces." Some of the tribal groups sided with the Spaniards, and that is probably "how the west was won" in South America; somewhat similar to how certain tribes sided with the British or French during the "French and Indian War."

Catholic or Protestant authorities have always wielded power from behind the scenes. The Vatican's actions in Croatia during WW2 was nothing short of stunning; the church was literally still killing people via proxy because of their religion in the 20th century! It was no accident that churches were built right on top of ancient Druidic temples, although the Christianizing of the Druids was a much less violent conflation and conversion than that of the Germanic peoples. Charlemagne used the most brutal methods; and during later periods, incoming Christian authorities cut off Viking trade routes if they refused to convert. Even people like St. Patrick weren't really who we may have thought they were. St. Patrick was an English Catholic who used conflation and deception to get the job done.

If we're totally honest, incoming pagan invaders sometimes did the same thing; such as when Olympian gods replaced the more ancient goddess Hecate. In the Val Camonica there is evidence of how, in certain instances, one goddess statue's head was knocked off and another god or goddess' statue was constructed next to it; then at a later point, that statue's head was knocked off, etc. Also, even in the still strongly pagan Val Camonica of the Middle Ages, the meaning of the name of the ancient goddess "Mona" was changed to "a whore" (ouch, that was difficult for me to type!). Everything about the ancient Camun culture was about the moon ("mon") and the moon goddess (Mona), and still this can happen when people forget their true folk past.

Huge multinational corporations from the United States, Western Europe, and elsewhere, used to work with Christian missionaries to first "soften up" the people whom they wanted to subjugate and/or "take their resources." Most often the grinning, well fed, perhaps drunken, and newly Christened people gave it away without a fight. I remember quacky Christian entrepreneur Bill Schnoebelen told a story once about how a newly arrived missionary, in rural Borneo, humiliated the local shaman to prove to the locals that Christ was really the way. In other words, that their own spirituality was a fraud and needed to go... permanently! Who knows if the story was even true, but this big business-missionary "dog and pony show" went on for centuries. The expanding Islamic program was more honest; it was either "convert"... or it was the sword.

'Carmina Burana' (Orff)

'Carmina Burana' is a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935 and 1936, based on 24 poems from the medieval collection 'Carmina Burana'. Its full Latin title is 'Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanæ cantoribus et choris cantandæ comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis' ('Songs of Beuern: Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magical images'). It is part of Trionfi, a musical triptych that includes Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite. The first and last movements of the piece are called 'Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi' ('Fortune, Empress of the World') and start with the very well known 'O Fortuna.'


'Carmina Burana' (manuscript)

'Carmina Burana', Latin for 'Songs from Benediktbeuern' [Buria in Latin]) is a manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts mostly from the 11th or 12th century, although some are from the 13th century. The pieces are mostly bawdy, irreverent, and satirical. They were written principally in Medieval Latin, a few in Middle High German, and some with traces of Old French. Some are macaronic, a mixture of Latin and German or French vernacular.

They were written by students and clergy when the Latin idiom was the lingua franca throughout Italy and western Europe for travelling scholars, universities, and theologians. Most of the poems and songs appear to be the work of Goliards, clergy (mostly students) who satirized the Catholic Church. The collection preserves the works of a number of poets, including Peter of Blois, Walter of Châtillon, and an anonymous poet referred to as the Archpoet.

The collection was found in 1803 in the Benedictine monastery of Benediktbeuern, Bavaria, and is now housed in the Bavarian State Library in Munich. It is considered to be the most important collection of Goliard and vagabond songs, along with the Carmina Cantabrigiensia.

The manuscripts reflect an international European movement, with songs originating from Occitania, France, England, Scotland, Aragon, Castile, and the Holy Roman Empire.

Twenty-four poems in Carmina Burana were set to music by Carl Orff in 1936. His composition quickly became popular and a staple piece of the classical music repertoire. The opening and closing movement 'O Fortuna' has been used in numerous films.



Carl Orff

Carl Heinrich Maria Orff (10 July 1895 – 29 March 1982) was a German composer, best known for his cantata 'Carmina Burana' (1937). In addition to his career as a composer, Orff developed an influential approach toward music education for children.


'O Fortuna' (poem and cantata)

 'O Fortuna' is a medieval Latin Goliardic poem written early in the 13th century, part of the collection known as the 'Carmina Burana'. It is a complaint about Fortuna, the inexorable fate that rules both gods and mortals in Roman and Greek mythology.

In 1935–36, 'O Fortuna' was set to music by German composer Carl Orff as a part of 'Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi', the opening and closing movement of his cantata 'Carmina Burana'. It was first staged by the Frankfurt Opera on 8 June 1937. It opens at a slow pace with thumping drums and choir that drops quickly into a whisper, building slowly in a steady crescendo of drums and short string and horn notes peaking on one last long powerful note and ending abruptly. The tone is modal, until the last 9 bars. A performance takes a little over two and a half minutes.

Orff's setting of the poem has influenced and been used in many other works and has been performed by countless classical music ensembles and popular artists. It can be heard in numerous films and television commercials, and has become a staple in popular culture, setting the mood for dramatic or cataclysmic situations. 'O Fortuna' topped a 2009 list of the most-played classical music of the previous 75 years in the United Kingdom.

In 1935–36, the 13th-century poem 'O Fortuna' was set to music by the German composer Carl Orff for his twenty-five-movement cantata 'Carmina Burana'. The composition appears in numerous films and television commercials and has become a staple in popular culture, setting the mood for dramatic or cataclysmic situations. For instance, it is used to portray the torment of Jim Morrison's drug addiction in the film 'The Doors'. In 1983, Doors' keyboardist Ray Manzarek released his third solo album, 'Carmina Burana', which is an interpretation of the piece in a contemporary framework.

'O Fortuna' has been called "the most overused piece of music in film history", and Harper's Magazine columnist Scott Horton has commented that "Orff’s setting may have been spoiled by its popularization" and its use "in movies and commercials often as a jingle, detached in any meaningful way from its powerful message." Its contemporary usage is often joking or satirical in nature, owing to its oversaturation in popular culture.
