La Festa dell’ Inverno: Winter 2023 - Part 2

Post Xmas

I had actually wanted to get this out, with a lot more content, before Xmas.... but I just didn't get to it. On the subject of Krampus.... Krampus is not just from German mythology, but from surrounding countries and regions as well. According to Wikipedia... "Krampus appears in the folklore of Austria, Bavaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Northern Italy, Autonomous Province of Trento and South Tyrol, Slovakia, and Slovenia." [Book: 'Celebrating Life Customs around the World: From Baby Showers to Funerals' by Victoria Williams; 2016]. Although German in origin, it ultimately comes from Norse mythology, and likely traveled within the folklore of Germanic tribes and bands such as Goths, Cimbrians, etc.

It seems strongest in the eastern Alps. However, although it's fun to be able to lay some sort've ancestral tie-in to the Krampus legend, the Italian Alps is ripe with many other mythological legends that I'll cover at some other time. On one video, someone suggested that the Krampus legend "migrated" to Trento, the Dolomites, etc. from the Austrian-Hapsburg Empire. This, of course, is absolute nonsense, as the Austrian occupiers were hated in Trento, Lombardy, and the Tri-Veneto! I didn't want to argue the point since it was just all just in fun. Clearly, this cultural migration was due to several small soft migrations of Germanic peoples over the centuries.

Outsiders & Outcasts (For Those That Don't Belong)

From the moment we are born as human beings, the people around us prepare us to fit the herd. We start out as being part of a family, and then we expand our social life with friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and, in many cases, a significant other. People tend to work together and spend time with each other, and thus, they form a well-oiled machine called society.

Living among the herd has many benefits, like safety, security, access to other people including potential mates, and a shared identity that creates a sense of self. But in some cases, the herd doesn’t want you anymore, and you become an outcast. Or you don’t want the herd anymore, and you become a recluse. Or, perhaps, a little bit of both.

No matter what the reason is: some people just don’t seem to belong. And when you don’t belong, you’re an outsider; an outcast. So, how do we handle being an outsider? What about those that don't belong?

This video explores the fate of those outsiders and outcasts that live outside the herd.

Lets make the public library popular again!

Somebody sure needed to state what's on the above image! Sometimes some closed minded right or left wing ideologue is presented with some fool-proof fact(s) that stops them in their tracks, and they immediately do a cowardly "quick google search" in order to justify their position with some scant counter argument, and they use it as justification for some destructive belief that they just can't exorcise from their minds. A real critical thinker---at least in their own mind!---challenges their beliefs by looking at it from the opposite camp, or a whole assortment of other checks to test it's validity. The main point that I wanted to make is that we all need to start physically going to the library again! Also, in our library systems are special research rooms, where records and other information can be found that we should all know about. Maybe we all need to make note that 2023 would be a good time to start using our library system a lot more!

Winter Solstice 274 CE: Roman Temple to Sol Invictus ("the Unconquerable Sun") is dedicated by Emperor Aurelian

Temple of the Sun (Rome)

The Temple of the Sun was a temple in the Campus Agrippae in Rome. It was dedicated to Sol Invictus on December 25, 274,[1] by the emperor Aurelian[2] and funded by spoils from his campaign against Palmyra. It was the fourth temple dedicated to the god in Rome – the other three were in the Circus Maximus, on the Quirinal Hill and in Trastevere.[3] If still in use by the 4th-century, it would have been closed during the persecution of pagans in the late Roman Empire.

It is believed that the temple was already in ruins by the sixth century, as eight of its porphyry columns were apparently sent to Constantinople at some point to be used in either the construction or the rebuilding of Hagia Sophia during the emperor Justinian's reign.

************

This temple was dedicated when the noonday sun was first observed to begin its return northward. The date of this dedication was later used by Christians as the date for Christmas.

Full Cold Moon "Supermoon" 2017

December... already!

This Full Cold "Supermoon" is a tweener... in between Saturday and Sunday evenings in practical terms. It occurs at 10:48 AM est/7:48 AM pst, and apparently Sunday evening is best. Along the coast here we've already been getting some cold and very clear winter-like evenings, of which Sunday evening is shaping up to be another.

'Full Moon Sunday Kicks Off 'Supermoon Trilogy,' Including a Lunar Eclipse'

Elizabeth Howell - Space.com - December 2, 2017

The Dec. 3 full moon is the first of three consecutive supermoons, including a lunar eclipse. The other supermoons will happen on Jan. 1 and Jan. 31, 2018. You can watch Sunday's supermoon live online here, courtesy of the online astronomy service Slooh or directly from Slooh.com here.

If you only have time to catch one of them, be sure to check out the "extra-special" Jan. 31 supermoon, NASA said in a statement Friday (Dec. 1). The late January supermoon will take place during a total lunar eclipse visible from western North America, the Pacific and Eastern Asia. It will also be a blue moon, too. [Supermoon 2017 Guide: When and How to See It]

A supermoon occurs  when the full moon is at the closest point of its orbit to the Earth, which is also called the perigee. That makes the moon look extra-close and extra bright — up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than a full moon at its furthest point from Earth, called the apogee.

Pair that up with a lunar eclipse, and you will have a spectacular view of the moon turning dark as it moves out of the sun's light and into the shadow of the Earth. Only the light reflected off Earth will be visible on its surface, producing a ruddy red-brown color on the moon's surface during totality.

Feed the Birds

Make a special treat for your backyard birds: Wrap yarn or string around the bottom row of a large pinecone and tie into a loop for hanging. Mix birdseed with enough natural peanut butter to hold the seeds together. Using a teaspoon, spread a small amount of the seed mixture on the top of each scale (imagining how the cone will hang), packing it as firmly as possible into the space. Hang the pinecone from a tree branch or bird feeder.

Perry Como ft Fontane Sisters- It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (RCA Victor Records 1951)

ChristmasTimeTV

"It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" is a classic Christmas song written in 1951 by Meredith Willson. The song was originally titled "It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas". The song has been recorded by many artists, but was a hit by Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters with Mitchell Ayres & His Orchestra on September 10, 1951. A popular but unproven belief in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, holds that Willson wrote the song while staying in Yarmouth's Grand Hotel. The song makes reference to a "tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well..."; the park being Frost Park, directly across the road from the Grand Hotel which still operates in Yarmouth. However Grand Hotel was a popular name used by many hotels in numerous towns and cities.

Spirit thoughts upon Yuletide

In the same manner that you may be walking along on a warm summer afternoon and feeling the invigoration of the warm air against your skin; you may also feel the invigoration of the cool air of a winter walk. To our Pagan ancestors, the spring was the start of the year, and the seasons paralleled the cycle of life itself. "Birth" in spring (usually the start of April), "Life" during the next eight months or so, and "Death"  and a "new arising" tied to the Yule season. "Birth, Life, Death and to a New Arising."

Lisa Thiel - Winter Solstice Song (with lyrics)

sremsremsrem

Lessinia, a region in the Veronese pre-Alps. If you use Google Maps and get right onto the ground in Val Camonica, Valtellina, or any Alpine region like this; you may notice the homes, and the very heavy shutters, probably two inches thick or more. Sometimes when I hike on a Yule night, I imagine my ancestors living in a home like that, maybe in 1870. The family huddled around the fire during Christmas on a freezing winter evening. That fire symbolizes the fire of the generations. You are carrying their torch.

The Origins of Christmas

Christians have hijacked the faith of pagans for a mythical child called Jesus and the corporations are cashing in on the ignorance reflected by Christians when they buy gifts for their loved ones.

The lynx

The lynx is not a very prominent figure in mythology. No fables or legends concerning the lynx have been found . There are a few proverbs concerning the lynx like for example "to wangle something out of someone" in German means "jemandem etwas abluchsen", which reminds us that the lynx is a very intelligent and quick hunter (Schenda 1995).

Befana

Legend

Christian legend had it that Befana was approached by the biblical magi, also known as the Three Wise Men (or the three kings) a few days before the birth of the Infant Jesus. They asked for directions to where the Son of God was, as they had seen his star in the sky, but she did not know. She provided them with shelter for a night, as she was considered the best housekeeper in the village, with the most pleasant home. The magi invited her to join them on the journey to find the baby Jesus, but she declined, stating she was too busy with her housework. Later, La Befana had a change of heart, and tried to search out the astrologers and Jesus. That night she was not able to find them, so to this day, La Befana is searching for the little baby. She leaves all the good children toys and candy ("caramelle") or fruit, while the bad children get coal ("carbone"), onions or garlic.

Another Christian legend takes a slightly darker tone as La Befana was an ordinary woman with a child whom she greatly loved. However, her child died, and her resulting grief maddened her. Upon hearing news of Jesus being born, she set out to see him, delusional that he was her son. She eventually met Jesus and presented him with gifts to make him happy. The infant Jesus was delighted, and he gave La Befana a gift in return; she would be the mother of every child in Italy.

Popular tradition tells that if one sees La Befana one will receive a thump from her broomstick, as she doesn't wish to be seen. This aspect of the tradition may be designed to keep children in their beds.

Another commonly heard Christian legend of la Befana starts at the time of the birth of baby Jesus. Befana spends her days cleaning and sweeping. One day the magi, also known as the three wise men, came to her door in search of baby Jesus. Befana turned them away because she was too busy cleaning. Befana notices a bright light in the sky; she thinks this is the way to baby Jesus. She brought some baked goods and gifts for baby Jesus in her bag and took her broom to help the new mother clean and began her search for baby Jesus. She searched and searched for Baby Jesus, but never found him. Befana still searches today, after all these centuries. On the eve of the Epiphany, Befana comes to a house where there is a child and leaves a gift. Although she has been unsuccessful in her search, she still leaves gifts for good young children because the Christ Child can be found in all children.

"Yule walk" - an individual tradition

Last evening, I engaged in what I have come to call my annual "Yule walk" after the defacto Winter and the approaching Yule. I started it some years ago without even thinking of it as a "thing" in of itself, or any type of annual "tradition." It can be whatever someone wants it to be, but for me it's a very individual tradition. It's an opportunity--two or three weeks before the chaos of Christmas and New Years--to take a reflective walk on a cold night by yourself. It should be a personal spiritual endeavor to connect with the past, present, and future at this dramatic weather-shifting time of the year. A time of the year that strongly feels like an "ending"... with a new "beginning" intuitively "visible" in the distance.

Saucy Joan is a murderous strumpet who wallops her husband to death on Christmas Eve and is then besieged by a homicidal maniac dressed as Santa Claus. Wonderfully dark episode from the '70s horror anthology movie, "Tales From the Crypt."

The eeriest scene

It would have to be within the context of the entire movie, but to me this scene from the original 'Tales From The Crypt' (UK; 1972) was the scariest horror scene. The secluded home during Christmas Eve on a dark snowy winter night.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) as a Christmas movie

I think this very funny and underrated movie, staring Steve Martin and the late John Candy, should be thought of more as a classic "Christmas move"... especially with the ending. However, one scene gives it its R-rating. It portrays, as sometimes can occur, that "bad experiences" can be remembered as fun times after the fact. Great interplay between Martin and Candy. A truly underrated film.

Reflections upon a Full Cold Moon

A Full Cold Moon on Christmas Night

Last night, while I stood in the wonderful cold darkness, I noticed how the almost full cold moon emitted what I at least perceived to be "bluish light" upon the ground, fences, and houses. Several months ago in the same spot, this light appeared "gold-like." I guess we could at least say that the moon itself can literally appear blue, white, orange, silver, red, etc. at various points of the year, and like magic, often roughly corresponding to the actual seasonal weather.

The word "solstice" is derived from the Latin "sol" (sun) and "sistere" (to stand still).. the "Winter Solstice." This is really more of the moon's time of the year. The moon, mon, ma, the mother, the head of the homestead, the center of the family, the hearth, the fireplace on a cold winter night.

The "offense" of saying ~Merry Christmas~

I don't understand as to how or why anyone could be "offended" by someone saying "Merry Christmas" to them. It would be the Atheist equivalent of, for example" a zealous Christian being offended by a "Pagan" Christmas tree. For me personally, I never liked the idea of a bunch of Ted Turner-like high financiers, who fund groups like the Freedom from Religion Foundation, making sudden demands upon everyone. I'll freely say "Merry Christmas" even though I am not Christan. To worry about such semantics when there are real issued on the table isn't very practical. My "Christmas" is largely Pagan. Actually, there are some Christians, Atheists, Agnostics, or even Satanists, who all appear to have defacto "Pagan values."

10 Remarkable Origins of
Common Christmas Traditions

I'm not going to place the whole article here, since the origin of the Christmas tree and the mistletoe have been covered.

Wreaths

Since classical antiquity, the wreath has been used as a symbol of power and strength. In Rome and Greece, kings and emperors often wore laurel wreathes as crowns – a practice they themselves borrowed from the Etruscans, who predated them. The Greeks and the Romans connected the laurel wreath to their sun god, Apollo, and considered the crown to embody his values.

Harvest wreathes – the predecessors to our modern decorations – were used in rituals for good harvests, and predate even written history. Ancient European animists often used evergreen in their wreathes to symbolize strength and fortitude, as an evergreen will live through even the harshest of winters. As for the connection to Christianity, since wreathes symbolized tenacity and everlasting life, they were often used in funerals of important people, specifically in the burials of saints and martyrs.

Pagans "stole" Christmas from Christians??

Last year, child actor turned faded actor turned semi-famous Christian activist, Kirk Cameron's film 'Saving Christmas' made the claim that the the many Christmas traditions of Pagan origin were actually 100% Christian all along! Even Christian supremacists, like Caryl Matrisciana, understand the Pagan origins of Christmas. Many books, such as 'Pagan Christmas', fully explore this subject. It was clear Papal policy, just as with their Roman predecessors, to co-opt and drown out Pagan holidays and spiritual traditions.

'Kirk Cameron Says Pagans Stole Christmas From Christians'

Someone should really inform the ever-so-earnest Mr. Cameron that Christian co-opting of pagan religious symbols can be found in the Bible itself. In Acts 17:22-24, the Apostle Paul is recorded as addressing an audience in Athens as follows:

"Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, :"To an unknown god." What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.' "

-- Mark Kessinger

Kirk Cameron: Don’t drink the pagan ‘Kool-Aid’ about Christmas, historians ‘don’t know this stuff’

People have been becoming more informed about the pagan origin of Christmas and other holidays for years. It is interesting that he would choose to come out with a movie mocking intelligence and real information for the sake of what he really WANTS to believe whether it is true or not. Shame on him.

-- Frank

Krampus - The "devil" of this Christmas season

Krampus

In Austro-Bavarian Alpine folklore, Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure who, during the Christmas season, punishes children who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards the well-behaved with gifts. Regions in Austria feature similar figures and, more widely, Krampus is one of a number of Companions of Saint Nicholas in regions of Europe. The origin of the figure is unclear; some folklorists and anthropologists have postulated a pre-Christian origin for the figure (see Germanic paganism).

In traditional parades and in such events as the Krampuslauf (English: Krampus run), young men dressed as Krampus participate; such events occur annually in most Alpine towns. Krampus is featured on holiday greeting cards called Krampuskarten.

The recent movie 'Krampus' brought back to life this semi-evil entity of pre-Christian Alpine-German folklore. In Pagan traditions, the concepts of good and evil weren't two sides at war with each other. Often they were thought of as two related expressions, two sides of the same coin. The good and bad in all of us was accepted.

What many Christians don't seem to comprehend, is that when you attempt to completely stamp something out... what you often get is just more of it. "Sex" is a good example of that. When suppressed, it then becomes empowered. It's just like with words; they only have the power given to them. Intrinsically, they have zero power.

'First Christmas Day full moon in nearly 40 years'

'First Christmas Day full moon in nearly 40 years'

-- Peaks at 6:11 am on Christmas Day

-- First Full Moon on Christmas since 1977

-- Nex one not until Christmas 2034

Michael Thomas - fox5dc.com - December 22, 2015

WASHINGTON - Christmas comes with a special treat this year – a full moon! No, it is not a supermoon, a blood moon or a lunar eclipse. It is simply just a full moon, the same phenomenon that brightens our night sky at least once a month. But what makes this moon so special is not what the moon is doing, but the day on which it is doing it.

It is accurate to say that the moon rotates the Earth generally “once a month.” However, the truth is that the moon completes a full rotation of the Earth once every 29.5 days. Because of this, getting a full moon to land on any specific day is generally a rare occurrence over the course of one human lifetime.

Let’s use July 4 as an example. The last full moon on Independence Day was in 1974, so anyone under the age of 41 has not seen a full moon on this date. If they want to see one then they have some waiting to do, since the next one isn’t slated until 2031. The fact that the day is a holiday does not make the event any more significant. Mother Nature will not grant me another full moon on my birthday until the year 2034.

The last full moon on Christmas Day was in 1977 and the next one will not occur until 2034, so it is still a sight worth seeing. You will have to be up a little early to see it in all its glory. The moon will reach its full peak at 6:11 a.m.

Even then, there is no guarantee you will be able to see it. The pattern this week is a very unsettled one, with the forecast featuring more clouds as opposed to clear skies for the bulk of the next seven days.

However, a little Christmas magic may just give us enough time for a glimpse of this rare event. Weather models show the potential for a weak area of high pressure to traverse the region late Christmas Eve through the first part of Christmas Day.

In the weather world, high pressure systems mean sinking air, which is bad for cloud formation. This may just be enough for the clouds to break up enough in some locations to allow the Christmas moon to shine through. It probably will not happen everywhere, but the odds are some in our area will at least be able to get a glimpse of it.

As this will also be the first full moon after the winter solstice, which occurred Monday at 11:49 p.m., it is what is known as the “cold moon.” This is because it typically signals the arrival of winter cold in North America, but that will certainly not be the case for us. Temperatures on Christmas Eve day are expected to rise to record levels in the mid-70s, with some model suggestions that Christmas Day may be near 70 degrees as well.

One thing is for sure. Regardless of how many clouds there are around our area, one man who will appreciate the full moon is Santa Claus. As he and his reindeer typically fly above the cloud deck, they will have ample moonlight and clear visibility as they deliver Christmas presents to the world. This also means Rudolph's red nose may get to enjoy a well-deserved year off, since his next break will not come for 19 more years!
