'Frozen in Time' - Italian Hall disaster - Part III

The Italian Hall and the Calumet Theatre

Christmas Eve 1913 in Calumet was meant to be a time of laughter, fun and presents for union miners and their families. There'd been a labor strike on for five months at that point, and it was high time for a little holiday cheer. The women's union group knew it, so it organized a massive holiday party for that night, held upstairs at the Italian Hall, a large red brick building at the corner of Elm and Seventh Streets.

More than six hundred people packed into the building for the festivities. The majority were children, either with their parents, their siblings or their friends. At the start, it was a fabulous time. The children sang Christmas carols, dancing and laughing with their friends. Santa had just come in, and kids were pushing to the stage to receive their gifts from under the big Christmas tree. Sadly, those presents would never make their way home.

Shortly after Santa arrived, a large bearded man pushed open the door to the hall and screamed, "Fire!" The spark of fear moved fast, and suddenly everyone was rushing to the one exit: a narrow staircase heading down to the front door of the building. The fire escape mostly went unnoticed in the mayhem. Terror propelled the revelers forward, shoving and pushing to the door, knocking over and trampling smaller bodies and the adults who stooped to pick them up. Some were crushed to death against the door of a cloakroom next to the staircase.

But those who made it to the stairs first had the worst fate. In the rush to escape, both children and adults were shoved from the steps and thrown down the stairs, landing against closed doors at the bottom. It continued in that fashion—whoever hit the landing was tossed into the stairway—and bodies piled atop one another. Newspapers at the time reported that the stairwell was filled to the ceiling with suffocating and crushed people. The doors at the bottom never opened to let anyone out.

The mayhem only lasted a few moments before those present realized that there was no fire, but it was long enough for massive casualties. All told, seventy-three people lost their lives that night by crushing or suffocation—fifty-nine children and fourteen adults. The youngest victim was only two years old.

The man who raised the fire alarm was never found. True to the union disputes at the time, rumors swirled that he was wearing an anti-union button. Many thought that he was sent by the mine bosses to break up the party as retaliation for the miners not working. Today, it is still one of the Upper Peninsula's biggest unsolved crimes.

Not much of the Italian Hall remains today, save for the arched doorway that still stands at the same spot, a folding chair from the event space and a single step from the stairs where so many met their fate. The step and chair are part of an exhibit at the Calumet Visitor Center; to place your hand on the step is to make a physical connection with the historic tragedy. You can almost feel the wrenching emotion felt by so many on the night of that party pulsing through your hand as you touch it.

A similar intensity fills the air at the actual site of the hall, where the arched doorway remains as part of a memorial park. Although the building itself is no longer there, the community honors the spirits of the dead inside with seventy-three luminaries, lit every Christmas Eve on a path on the way to the arch.

After the catastrophe, bodies of the dead were moved a block away to the Red Jacket Town Hall and Opera House, now the Calumet Theatre, which worked as a temporary morgue. It took hours to identify all the bodies, compounded by false recognitions from distraught parents amid all the confusion and chaos. Mothers in the street were screaming out for their lost children in the hopes they had survived, while inside, parents were taking away bodies of what they thought were their own children, only to return with the body later after finding theirs alive and well.

More than twenty thousand people came to Calumet for the victims' mass burial on December 28, 1913. Caskets had been shipped in from surrounding towns, and simple pine boxes were also constructed for burials. At the nearby Lakeview Cemetery, striking miners dug trench graves for all the bodies. A handful of local churches hosted funerals. Afterward, everyone filed outside, marching down Pine Street in a massive procession of mourners, with union members carrying caskets of children and horse- drawn hearses holding adult coffins. Thousands walked with the procession to the cemetery, where a multilingual graveside service continued past sunset and into the evening.

"Saturn" to the ancients

The planet Saturn played such a pivotal role in the spiritual life of the ancients all over the world. One of the many odd unexplained aspects of this is simply the word "Saturn," of which some form is present in the old tongue of many totally unrelated and/or remote cultures.

"satan pertains to Saturn, the Irish Gaelic word for Satan is satarn, and the Bantu word for Saturn is isateni" -- SilverMirrorSole, YouTube user

“Dead North”: How Police Chief Laura Frizzo Sacrificed All To Catch Convicted Killer Kelly Cochran

Mike McPadden - CrimeFeed.com - May 28, 2018

IRON RIVER, MI — On October 27, 2014, Iron River Police Chief Laura Frizzo acted on a tip regarding Chris Regan, 51-year-old local man had gone missing two weeks earlier.

In short order, Frizzo’s search would expose a deadly love triangle, serial murder, and even allegations of cannibalism. It’s also believed to have cost Chief Frizzo her job — a toll she said she endured in the ultimate pursuit of justice.

When officers found Chris Regan’s abandoned car, it contained a note with handwritten directions to the home of married couple (above, main photo) Kelly Cochran, 31, and Jason Cochran, 35, in nearby Caspian, Michigan.

From the get-go, the Cochrans acted shady. Jason told the cops who rang their doorbell that Kelly wasn’t home, immediately after which Kelly bounded down the stairs spouting an excuse to cover for her husband’s lie.

The following morning, Detective Sergeant Jeremy Ogden interviewed the Cochrans individually while Chief Frizzo watched on a monitor and filled out paperwork for search warrants. Ogden got quite a story out of them.

'Dead North' documentary

This true-crime story was covered in this May's 4-part documentary--'Dead North'--on the Investigation Discovery channel. It now appears likely that Kelly Cochran likely murdered 9 people with particularly gruesome details. Iron River is a town of about three thousand near Iron Mountain in Upper Michigan. Born and raised Yooper Frizzo ran this investigation like a big city seasoned pro, yet unfortunately her thanks was being fired by the ex-felon city manager simply because he didn't like her personally. A strong effort by the citizens to reinstate her failed. She was the first female chief of police in Upper Michigan. I don't know if "Frizzo" is her married name or not, but it's a surname with origins in the western Veneto; more generally in the Verona province. In particular, Lombard, Venetian (Tri-Veneto), and Trentenese heritage are well represented in Upper Michigan. Getting back to the original point, this tragic true-crime case is a dramatic female-version of "the Sheriff vs. the bad guy" so to speak.

'Cults and Extreme Beliefs'

A new program on the AandE channel is 'Cults and Extreme Beliefs', which premiered on May 28 and 29. It's similar to one of my favorites from Investigation Discovery entitled 'Deadly Devotion', which I hope they will bring back.

In Cults and Extreme Belief, Elizabeth Vargas, alongside former members of controversial organizations, goes on a search to uncover how these sects use their influence to prey upon people’s desperation to create powerful and often destructive belief systems. Each episode will take an immersive look at one currently active group through the eyes of past devotees and get perspective from believers and leaders that are still inside.

“A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring.” -- Alexander Pope

'Column: A little learning is a dangerous thing; more is better'

Sabine Eiche - Richmond News - August 27, 2014

You may have heard the phrase, “A little learning is a dangerous thing.” It’s found in Alexander Pope’s poem An Essay on Criticism, composed in 1709. Pope wrote “A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again.”

What does it mean? In effect, Pope is saying that a little learning or knowledge (the “shallow draughts”) will only befuddle (“intoxicate the brain”), misleading us into thinking we know more than in fact we do. Remedy for this problem lies in continuing to learn (“drinking largely” at the “Pierian spring,” the spring sacred to the Muses and the source of the knowledge of art and science). But the idea expressed in those verses is much older than the 18th century. It’s possible that it goes back a few thousand years.

Pierian Spring

In Greek mythology, the Pierian Spring of Macedonia was sacred to the Muses. As the metaphorical source of knowledge of art and science, it was popularized by a couplet in Alexander Pope's poem "An Essay on Criticism" (1711): "A little learning is a dang'rous thing; / Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring."

'14 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Moved to Argentina'

Karina Martinez-Carter - ThrillList.com - November 21, 2014

Say “Argentina” out loud and people will wonder if you’re some sort of geography Rain Man for just blurting out South American nations. But generally speaking, the country brings to mind a handful of images -- soccer greats like Maradona and Messi, tango, and nowadays, even the Pope.

But, well, there’s a lot more to Argentina than what you’ll find out from Hollywood or the news. These are the 14 things I wish I knew before I moved to Argentina.

Everyone has a shrink

Argentina has more psychologists per capita than anywhere in the world. Friends, coworkers, and dates will add their shrinks’ insight without pause into conversation. Basically, you’re crazy if you don’t see a shrink. Freud's still the man here, though, so at any moment the subject being discussed can take a turn for the sexual.

Kiss hello, kiss goodbye

The Argentine goodbye is the polar opposite of the Irish goodbye. Here, you take the time to kiss everyone on the cheek upon arrival and prior to leaving. This goes for girls, guys, Grandma, and even pets. OK, the last one is a lie. But you do it even if it takes 10 minutes and requires stretching across tables. Give a general wave goodbye and everyone will think you’re a cold, rude foreigner.

Love hotels are normal

There are hotels, there are hostels, and then there are telos, or “love hotels”, to put it nicely. With many people living at home until they're close to 30 or married, telos are a big business and there’s one to suit everybody's style. You can find spots mirroring traditional-looking hotels with white sheets and shiny fixtures, but also kinkier spots with hot tubs and mirrored walls. Most patrons seek the latter. You can even indulge your inner freak with themed rooms like Arabian Nights and Star Wars. If you can dream it, there’s probably a telo room for it. Just look out for places marked "albergue transitorio."

The customer is not always right

In fact, the customer is often wrong. And if you’re wrong, you’ll be told you're wrong. Sometimes that results in a shouting match at the checkout counter while a line starts snaking around the store, leading to more people getting fired up.

Such encounters usually go one of two ways: the person tending to you will either shrug and do absolutely nothing, or go so far beyond the call of duty that you’ll wonder if you’re in some bizarro good karma universe. And you’ll never be able to predict which one it’ll be.

Cash rules everything around me

Four years of living in Argentina has been like an undergraduate education in economics. When I first arrived, the Argentine peso was slightly less than 4:1 with the dollar. Today it’s more than 14:1, but also 8:1 if you consult the black market goblins or the dubious government-reported numbers. It’s all about the dolla dolla bills, ya’ll.

Everyone celebrates everything

The 2014 calendar has 15 government holidays, including eight long weekends. The US? Just 10 official holidays, and the only people who really get all of them deliver mail or work in banks.

But Argentines celebrate everything to the extreme: a goodbye party before a two-week long vacation or a welcome back party upon returning from that trip. The first day of spring, for example, is a blowout. Though it’s actually a working holiday, employers gift their workers plants and everyone wishes each other a feliz primavera (happy spring) and goes out partying.

“Grave of Timothy Clark Smith”

Evergreen Cemetery is the home of one of America's weirdest graves. The headstone, which has a small 14" x 14" glass window looking down into the coffin, was created for Dr Timothy Clark Smith.  Smith had an irrational fear of being buried alive, so when he died he left instructions to build a window looking down into his coffin in case he was accidentally buried alive. Lucky for him, he wasn't, but the strange grave is still around today and if you're brave enough you can take a peek.

American Progress is an 1872 painting by John Gast, a Prussian-born painter, printer, and lithographer who lived and worked most of his life in Brooklyn, New York. American Progress, an allegory of Manifest Destiny, was widely disseminated in chromolithographic prints. It is now held by the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles, California.

Other than he painted American Progress, and that he was born December 21, 1842, in Berlin, and died July 26, 1896, in Brooklyn, little else is known about Gast's life.

************

The Goddess Iduna as "American Progress"?

Of course, I don't really believe that John Gast was thinking of the Goddess Iduna when he painted this piece... apparently his only known artwork. According to Guido von List, The name Iduna ... is that of a North Germanic goddess of eternal youth and renewal. One could say that American Progress and Manifest Destiny were representative of a type of collective eternal youth and renewal... at least for the conquering people of that time. It's curious that Gast painted this famous piece, and never tried to capitalize on his newly found fame. It's also curious that he was Prussian by ancestry, and Iduna was a north Germanic goddess. Again, I alone am making this additional allegorical connection as merely food for thought. A folkish archetype can exist in our collective DNA memory. It is also curious that according to the Prose Edda, the Goddess Iðunn left her home in Asgard and into the unknown woods in search of apples (eternal youth and renewal).

'The Spring' (eternal youth and renewal) by Franz Xaver Winterhalter

Winterhalter was born in a little village in the Black Forest. I couldn't find any definite connection to Iduna, but this image comes up on "Iduna" searches. "The Spring" can symbolize renewal, and perhaps eternal youth as well.

In Norse mythology, Iðunn is a goddess associated with apples and youth. Iðunn is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both sources, she is described as the wife of the skaldic god Bragi, and in the Prose Edda, also as a keeper of apples and granter of eternal youthfulness.

Old Rasputin
Russian Imperial Court

Never Say Die

Contrary to what the name suggests, Russian Imperial Stout was originally brewed in 18th Century England. The name evolved as the Russian Imperial Court developed an early appreciation for this big, intense brew and provided an eager export market.

It's been speculated that on one had a greater appreciation of this rich, roasty elixir than Rasputin, the mystic wag (and favorite of the ladies of the court) who was the ultimate downfall of Czar Nicholas II.

Rasputin is probably best remembered for this dramatic exit. Having been deemed politically expendable, he was fed poisoned wine and tea cakes by his rivals. Surviving that, he was shot several times--whereupon he attacked his assailants. He finally succumbed when bound and stuffed through a hole in the ice to drawn in the river Neva.

Legends that attribute his tenacity to his appetite for Russian Imperial Stout are unproven.

The Origin of "Magic"

Where did "magic" come from? The word is first heard in the English language in the fourteenth century, recorded in Chaucer's 'The Man of Law's Tale' (1386), but comes from older tongues. English borrowed the word from the Old French "magique," which in turn came from the late Latin "magica." But the trail does not end there. The Latin word derived from the Greek "magike," a contraction of the phrase "magike techme, meaning "sorcerer's art'. "Magike" was the adjectival form of "magos," a word of Persian origin. Amongst the ancient Medes and Persians the Magi were a priestly class much noted for their occult prowess. Whilst authors such as Ammianus Marcellinus unnecessarily connected the Magi with the Brahmin of India, we, educated by the study of Witchcraft's history, immediately see the link between the Medes, the people founded by the witch-goddess Medea (or by Medea's son, depending on whose account one reads), and this occult art of magic.

Stargazers say there's a hidden world lurking at the edge of our solar system. However, it is NOT about to smash into us and cause the apocalypse

Jasper Hamill - 'The Sun' (UK) - October 13, 2017

NASA has admitted that a mysterious world called Planet Nine is hidden out of sight at the edge of our solar system.

The gigantic icy planet is believed to be ten times larger than Earth and 20 times farther away from the sun than Neptune.

Conspiracy theorists have recently claimed that a similar world called Nibiru is about to plunge into Earth and wipe out humanity.

But while Nasa said it was "closing in" on Planet Nine, it has repeatedly said the Nibiru is a fraud.

In its latest statement, Nasa reassured the world that Planet Nine has no chance of "colliding with Earth or bringing 'days of darkness'" to our own fragile world.

"There are now five different lines of observational evidence pointing to the existence of Planet Nine," said Konstantin Batygin, a planetary astrophysicist at Caltech in Pasadena.

Some of these clues relate to the gravitational tug of Planet Nine, which appears to be disturbing the distant Kuiper Belt, which is made up of icy objects and stretches from Neptune out into deep space.

Its believed Planet Nine is a "super-Earth", the name for a type of large world which appears to be very common in the universe.

Doom-mongers have consistently claimed that a hidden world called Nibiru will crash into Earth.

Nasa has denied this theory, previously writing: "The planet in question, Niburu, doesn't exist, so there will be no collision.

"The story of Niburu has been around for years (as has the 'days of darkness' tale) and is periodically recycled into new apocalyptic fables."

However, it's feared Planet Nine will eventually destroy the solar system by causing a devastating "death dance".

It could one day hurtle through our solar system, sending planets “pinballing” into outer space or plunging into the Sun.

Dr Dimitri Veras of the Department of Physics said: “The existence of a distant massive planet could fundamentally change the fate of the solar system.

“The fate of the solar system would depend on the mass and orbital properties of Planet Nine, if it exists.”

Luckily for us, humanity has about seven billion years to prepare for this grim eventuality, which will take place when the Sun begins to die.

Jaguars Are Returning to Southern Arizona

Edge of Science

All wild cats are important to ecosystem functioning because they are apex predators and therefore impact the entire food chain. In Southern Arizona, the top predator is the mountain lion, but over the last 15 years, solitary male jaguars, typically one at any given time, have migrated from Northern Mexico into Southern Arizona and New Mexico. As an endangered species, the jaguar has ignited a series of controversial lawsuits and Federal actions that has resulted in the designation of critical habitat in several mountain ranges in this region of the U.S. This habitat designation has raised many concerns in the ranching community that operates on and in some cases owns the land within these boundaries. Although the designation fuels the perception that the ranching livelihood is under threat, It’s unlikely that the designation in itself will have any impact on the ranching operations within jaguar critical habitat. However, the protection of these large, unfragmented open spaces that is mutually critical for both the jaguar and the ranchers and may ultimately highlight the importance of these ranching operations to continued jaguar vitality in the region.

The time for Magic

It has always been believed that there was a right and proper time for the operation of magic, as this extract from an old grimoire attributed to Iroë-Grego shows:

An experiment of speaking with spirits or conjuring them should be operated in the day and hour of Mercury. A certain atmospheric condition is also required for the experiment and an obscure, uninhabited place congruous to such an art is even more necessary But if the experiment be concerned with a theft, it should be performed in the hour of the Moon and on her day. The experience of invisibility should be operated when the Moon is in Pisces. Experiments of love, favour and grace should be accomplished on the day and in the hour of the Sun or Venus. Works of destruction, hatred and desolation should be performed on the day and in the hour of Saturn. Extra-ordinary experiences should be operated in corresponding hours on the day of Jupiter.

[Iroë-Grego, also Iohé Grevis and Iroe Grevis, is mentioned in a manuscript thought to date from the sixteenth century held in the British Mueseum. He is described as a Babylonian philosopher of post-Solomonic times.]

"Mystical definition" of Magick

There apparently are eight general categories of magickal practices, with fancy names and complex definitions. However, one of them defined it well for me at least: "Mystical." It's defined simply as being in tune with everything, connected to the divine, or effecting change with the assistance of the divine. I would add, for myself, incessant ancestor veneration and the importance of symbolic ritual.

If Easter doesn't finally ring in spring, then Beltane is the sealer; with the rains finally at season's end, the mark of what will be six months of generally good weather. "May Eve" is also a time for celebration for many as well. Beltane/May Day is known in Stregheria as "Tana's Day." The coming Full Pink Moon will occur on the evening of April 29, only one day prior to Beltane; therefore we will have something of a three-day festival. A Full Pink Moon on the 29th, May Eve on the 30th, and Beltane on May 1st. If you check, there likely will be a Beltane spring ritual, with maypole dances and chanting; usually by younger female dancers. It's no longer a fertility rite, now merely a spring festival.

Tana’s Day — La Giornata di Tana — May Eve/May 1

Celebration for the full return of the Goddess from the Realm of Shadows. She has returned to her hidden children, bringing with her the Mysteries she has learned. We also celebrate God and Goddess, and their delight in each other. They court, and the world is made merry. Goddess becomes the dominant force, and the Goddess months begin.

'What is Alpha Centauri hiding? Searches for Earth-like planets ramp up around our nearest stellar neighbor'

David Aragorn - EarthMysteryNews.com - April 11, 2018

Alpha Centauri, a three-star system just 4 light-years away that is the sun's nearest neighbor, ought to be a great place to look for Earth-like planets. But last week, at a meeting of the European Astronomical Society (EAS) here, astronomers lamented the way the system has thwarted discovery efforts so far—and announced new efforts to probe it.

“It’s very likely that there are planets,” says Pierre Kervella of the Paris Observatory in Meudon, France, but the nature and positions of the stars complicate the search. “It’s a little frustrating for planet searchers.”

The system’s two sunlike stars, Alpha Centauri A and B, orbit each other closely while Proxima Centauri, a tempestuous red dwarf, hangs onto the system tenuously in a much more distant orbit. In 2016, astronomers discovered an Earth-mass planet around Proxima Centauri, but the planet, blasted by radiation and fierce stellar winds, seems unlikely to be habitable. Astrobiologists think the other two stars are more likely to host temperate, Earth-like planets.

Antarctica the Real Story is Stranger than Fiction

Spiritual Warfare

Way down in New Swabia, Antarctica, two panicked survivors of a British reconnaissance team scream these words into a radio message: “The Polar Men have found us!” And then the radio goes dead. This was at t almost the exact same moment when Europe is celebrating V-E day in May 1945.

Still, more and more revelations were forthcoming. The summer before, we were told, the original scientists and commandos had found an “ancient tunnel”. Under orders, the force went through the tunnel but only two returned before the Antarctic winter set in. During the winter months, the two survivors made absurd claims over the radio about “Polar Men, ancient tunnels and Nazis.”

Mark 8:38

Mark 8:38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. [KJV]

Basically Christ was saying - anybody who is ashamed of Him, He shall be ashamed of them. -- Cerdd_Wen, YouTube user

According to Pastor John MacArthur, unlike the above definition, all Christians (and everybody) should point-blank be ashamed.

Night of the Living Dead (HD, FULL MOVIE, 1968)

Brandon Tobatto

1968 classic in FULL HD!

************

'Night of the Living Dead' turns 50

There's some sort've hi-tech restoration of the film now available for the film's 50th anniversary (see below). This film was very popular way back on the Bay Area's local 'Creature Features' weekend late-night horror showcase. I recall, although I don't remember where, of viewing an uncut/expanded edition with many deleted scenes. It was very interesting, a very different twist to the entire film. There was an eccentric overzealous preacher who looked a lot like Anton LeVey featured. There are a lot of interesting reunions and interviews about the film on YouTube. There is one curious interview with Duane Jones, who played the main protagonist "Ben." He turned to teaching acting and performing in the theater after NLD. An eloquent speaker and connoisseur of the arts, he was hardly the type to star in a horror film... much less one as gruesome as this... and one of the most famous horror classic of all. He passed away 30 years ago.

George Romero, the father of the zombie genre, passed away last year at a time where this genre is more popular than ever. Somehow he lost rights to NLD and it became "public domain," so he benefited little financially from it. One aspect of NLD which struck me was that it was so "Pennsylvania." Supernatural aside, the scenery and characters fit well in the countryside of western Pennsylvania. Up to that time, a really scary movie would've been like 'Psycho'; there had never been a film like this before! This was no-holds bared. The film industry probably wanted to give it an X rating. Perhaps only 'The Exorcist', which came out five years later, was as shocking for films in-and-around that time period.

Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds - Fallin' In Love

Jun Cristobal

Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds was a 1970s AM soft rock trio from Los Angeles. The original members were Dan Hamilton (guitar/lead vocal), Joe Frank Carollo (bass/vocal), and Tommy Reynolds (multi-instrumentalist/vocal), all of whom had previously played in The T-Bones, a 1960s band noted for the instrumental hit "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)". The group first hit the charts in 1971 with "Don't Pull Your Love." Reynolds left the group in late 1972, and was replaced by keyboardist Alan Dennison; however, the band still kept the name 'Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds'. This revised line-up scored the group's biggest hit, 1975's "Fallin' in Love."

'As Filming Ends, Bill Moseley Raves That ‘3 from Hell’ is a Rob Zombie Masterpiece'

John Squires - Bloody-Disgusting.com - April 12, 2018

If you’re asking me, The Devil’s Rejects remains Rob Zombie’s masterpiece, which is why I’m personally very excited that he’s returning to that world for third “Firefly Franchise” installment, 3 from Hell. Bill Moseley, Sid Haig and Sheri Moon are (somehow) all back for the new film, which appears to have just wrapped filming this week.

Fitting, giving House of 1000 Corpses just celebrated its 15th birthday!

In a post over on Facebook, Moseley raved about Zombie’s latest…

“Exhausted but happy, Rob Zombie masterpiece, 3 from Hell, in the proverbial can (nowadays I guess it’s in the hard drive). Great time last night, got all the shots we needed before we picture wrapped on the Valuzat movie ranch in dear old Santa Clarita, and now the trucks are packed and rolling, the actors all changed out of their wardrobe & makeup and off to new adventures, the sun’s up and I’m heading down the highway, my spirit animals, the Doobie Brothers, filling my head and heart with enough rhythm and cheer to get me back home to Los Angeles. It’ll probably hit me in a day or two what we did, the enormity, the intensity, but meanwhile, I’m going to eat a lot, sleep a lot, brush em like crazy (Beach Boys lyric).

One thing I can say, when this movie comes out, your guys’s mindsies are gonna be big time blown! Thanks for your thoughts & prayers (haha), Otis D.”

Fast Times at Ridgemont High Filming Locations and Book Daily VLOG 074

VinceRocca

I take you on a journey to Fast Times Filming locations as I explain the history behind Cameron Crowes book Fast Times at Ridgemont High that includes a bit about Neal Preston on set of the shooting of We Bought A Zoo. Daily VLOG of another beautiful California day. The story also involves Hailee Steinfeld, Scarlett Johansson and Crystal the Capuchin Monkey. See what movies were shot at Van Nuys High School and Sherman Oaks Galleria.

************

For a film 36 years old, it's amazing how it possesses so many contemporary elements. For one thing, the early 80s ushered in a more modern cinematography which has remained comparatively similar. Many elements and behaviors of teenage life are comparatively similar. Even "the mall" could pass for today. The Fast Times book probably should be republished. It's interesting that Cameron Crowe's other personal non-fiction film 'Almost Famous' had a more-or-less similar general theme. It's fascinating when people are able to visit the filming location of a favorite film(s), Personally, I've never done it; but I would imagine that it would be like a paraspiritual experience, regardless if others would not see it that way.

Orleans - Dance With Me

Jun Cristobal

"Dance with Me" is the title of a 1975 hit single by American soft rock band Orleans.

The song was written by group member John Hall and journalist-turned-lyricist Johanna Hall (then a married couple). According to Johanna Hall, John Hall wrote the melody first, and when on first hearing it Johanna suggested "Dance with Me" as the title John rejected the idea as too simple. The couple were out driving one day when Johanna, struck by inspiration, blurted out the lyrics: "Pick the beat up and kick your feet up", and John was won over to the idea of her writing the song's lyric for the title "Dance With Me."

Featuring a melodica solo by Larry Hoppen, "Dance With Me" was introduced on the album Let There Be Music and was issued as that album's second single July 19 1975 to become Orleans' first Top 40 single, reaching a Billboard Hot 100 peak of #6 that October.

The Great Alter of Zeus

************

Pergamon Altar

The Pergamon Altar is a monumental construction built during the reign of king Eumenes II in the first half of the 2nd century BC on one of the terraces of the acropolis of the ancient Greek city of Pergamon in Asia Minor.

******

Up until the second half of the 20th century it had been assumed by some scholars that the altar was endowed in 184 BC by Eumenes II after a victory over the Celtic Tolistoagian tribe and their leader Ortiagon. In the meantime, later datings relating the altar to archaeological findings and historical events are under discussion. It is not imperative to connect the altar endowment with specific military events such as the Roman victories over Antiochos III in 184 BC in alliance with Eumenes II, or Eumenes II's own victory over the Galatians in 166 BC.

Investigation of the altar's construction and friezes has led to the conclusion that it was not conceived as a monument to a particular victory. The design of Pergamene victory monuments is known from the literature and monument relics. The most famous are Roman copies of bronze statues of the "Great Gaul," representations of defeated Celts after the victory of Attalos I over the Tolistoagians, or reliefs showing booty weapons from the halls of the Pergamene Athena sanctuary, which was dedicated by Eumenes II to the goddess who brought victory after the triumph over the Seleucids and their allies in 184 BC.

'The Ainu, the hidden people of Japan, try to keep their traditions alive'

Dean Irvine - CNN.com - February 9, 2015

"Are you scared when you have to go back to the mountain at night?"

It's a not a question guides at a museum would usually be asked, but it's happened to those at the outdoor Ainu Museum and cultural village in Hokkaido, the northernmost and second-largest island of Japan.

The museum is dedicated to the culture of the Ainu people, an ethnic group that not many -- even in Japan itself -- know much about.

For weary guides at the museum, who live close to the museum in Shiraoi, an hour's drive from the city of Sapporo (but not in primitive huts on the hillside), being able to tell visitors about their unique heritage and language is worth the occasional muddleheaded question.

Brutal hunting methods

The Ainu people are the indigenous inhabitants of Hokkaido. They're also present on Sakhalin, the island off the east coast of Russia, as well as northern Honshu, Japan's biggest island.

Meeting a modern day Ainu isn't common.

Estimates put the population of Ainu at around 24,000, and finding any who can speak the critically endangered language fluently is harder still: the Endangered Language Project puts the number of native speakers at just 10.

Located outside the small town of Shiraoi (itself an Ainu word meaning "place with many horseflies"), the museum is a re-creation of an Ainu village on the shores of Lake Poroto.

Visitors are immediately greeted by a 30-foot wooden statue of a bearded Ainu chief. From this stoic totem they can stroll among a series of thatched houses and botanical gardens, getting a glimpse of Ainu traditions stretching back about 1,000 years.

The Bonnie Blue Flag (instrumental)

The Bonnie Blue flag is such a great song, either in instrumental or with vocals, that I couldn't really sift through them all on YouTube and choose the best ones. Basically it's a song best sung by a chorus of men, but this instrumental was so good and showed the flag without any visual distraction.

Below is a powerful scene from the 1999 tv-movie 'The Hunley', a pretty good film about the submarine developed by the Confederacy during the Civil War... and which was actually raised from the ocean sometime after the film was produced, with the naval seamen receiving military burials. What was interesting about the scene was that one of the major Carolina coastal cities, I can't remember which one (Charleston?), was being very effectively bombed by Union battle ships. I don't think many people today think of air bombings anytime during in the 19th century.

The Hunley is one of my favorite movies. Scientists now believe they know how the crew died. It wasn't drowning, It was traumatic concussion that ruptured their lungs and caused massive brain hemorrhage from the concussion of the torpedo. They achieved their goal- they took out an enemy ship successfully and  changed naval warfare forever.
